Maybe I’m an old geezer, but I have never heard anybody say proof-of-stake before. What is it supposed to mean? I still think the proof is in the pudding.

The start of Bitcoin captured my boss’s imagination. He had a fair number of coins but lost his password! To me it felt like a Ponzi, chain letter, pyramid scheme all wrapped in a prime number generating spreadsheet….

I looked it up on Wikipedia and now I’m even more confused: Proof-of-stake (PoS) protocols are a class of consensus mechanisms for blockchains that work by selecting validators in proportion to their quantity of holdings in the associated cryptocurrency. This is done to avoid the computational cost of proof-of-work (POW) schemes. The first functioning use of PoS for cryptocurrency was Peercoin in 2012, although the scheme, on the surface, still resembled a POW.

To sum up the gazillion above comments……Crypto is imaginary money, for which, you pay real money, hoping that your imaginary money will increase in value. Then you may sell it to another sucker at a profit.

    What could possibly go wrong??

Insanity check: at present the capitalization of the major cryptocurrencies is about 54.5 billion USD, down from 174 billion two years ago today. Right at half of the current crypto is bitcoin.

Good thing for all non-investors is that a catastrophic event in the currency will not have a major effect on many economies.
