My neighbors went on a genocidal campaign of chemical warfare against mosquitoes. The result? We’ve got more mosquitoes than ever, but no honeybees or lightning bugs!
There is magic in the world, its all around us. . . look at a baby, puppies, kittens, the surf just at sunrise or sunset, a meadow, the mountains, firefly’s on a Midwest summer’s night, you love’s eyes in that moment when you realized that he / she is the one.
Astute observers will note that none of these moments involve quarterly reports, cost analysis, opposition research or any of that drivel. They involve our connection to the world and to each other on a one on one basis.
It makes me nuts. Please! Plants with showy flowers, e.g. dandelions, roses, goldenrod, whatever, do NOT afflict allergy sufferers with hay-fever and such. Those showy flowers are meant to attract some pollinating agent such as flies, bats, humming birds, or bees, and their pollen grains are big and sticky. Their pollen DOESN’T blow around and get in people’s noses. It’s the wind-pollinated plants, trees, grasses, ragweed and such, which DON’T have showy flowers, that cause all the problems.
It’s probably all just pixels and pavement — but you can mitigate the effects by dining on pasta with a pesto of parsely, pepitas, and Parmesan. Finish with pistachio ice cream.
Have a farmer friend that had some very old roundup from the farm that he figured had to be pretty weak by now. So he sprayed the dandelions in his nice yard. Today the lawn looks like it has leprosy, all the neighbors are having fun kidding him about it. His wife is not happy.
Dandelion roots can be made into tea. Dandelion leaves can be eaten raw as part of a salad, or even cooked as part of a vegetable dish. Look up “Dandelions, Dandelion Roots on the internet.” It is a lot safer to eat them, than spray poison on them to kill them.
The only “weed” I don’t tolerate in my yard is the thistle. And I go at it mano-a-mano, digging each plant up as it sprouts. I’ll let most anything else grow (if it weren’t for the weeds, there wouldn’t be much lawn in lots of places), but bare feet and thistles don’t coexist happily!
Are the community ordinances requiring regular mowing a liberal assault on our liberties, or a conservative one? Now, if the ordinance required only the use of a non-motorized push mower and the rejection of all chemicals, I could see liberal overtones – but forcing people to follow “community standards” seems awfully conservative.

Did the mowers do an EIS first to determine the effect on butterflies and bees?
