A common occurrence in my house though Dean doesn’t tap he just purrs very loudly. When I had my Mozart he would tap on various parts of my face and if that didn’t work then it was whiskers in the ear time – trust me that will wake you from the deepest sleep :)
My Sparky likes to do that. One night I was woken up by her purring in my ear, because I was petting her. Apparently I can now skritch cats in my sleep…
I swear, my Blossom picks the most inopportune times to want attention. When I’m trying to sleep isn’t even the worst time! But Lupin there reminds me of Blossom pawing at the covers looking for a hand to provide pets. It’s hard to be annoyed at them when they’re so cute. :D
I will not even describe the inopportune bed invasion by a litter of kittens that I did not know existed until they escaped a locked room in my host’s house and attacked her feet with their tiny claws.
Sofi used to tap my face so I would lift the edge of the blanket for her to burrow under. She’d go all the way down to use my ankle as a pillow. And heaven forbid if I should move!
On a different note: Over the weekend we had to take our baby to the vet (never during regular business hours). He had been acting ill & wasn’t pooping. Turned out he had ingested my long hair & it was messing up his gut. Fortunately he’s doing well, but it could have been very bad. Long-hair folks take note!
Bill does that, smacking my face, several times a night, and he doesn’t stop until I accompany him to the kitchen and show him his food bowl. If I try to ignore him, his claws come out just a little, and sometimes he’ll bite and pull my hair. He has me well trained, this little Russian Blue. (That’s Bill five years ago on my avatar.)
My current cat Maxie doesn’t wake me up, but if I wake up in the middle of the night and get up she will often come by me when I go back to bed and figure I can pet her since I am awake anyway. She usually will tap at my face like Lupin or my hand if that is out of the covers.
I tend to rest on my side… my cat Jeremy (a huge mixed breed, one of the larger cats I’ve had) loves to crawl onto my side and nuzzle his head against mine. It’s extremely sweet, at least until my arm falls asleep!
My Tika does this. Tap, tap, tap on my cheek telling me she needs to be petted. She did this just the other night… and she is the only one of my three cats who does this.
Two of my 4 decide that as soon as the light goes out each will take an arm, lay down on it for tummy scratches. Once I finally fall asleep. Miscreant will meander to my hip and KK will get up and back up to my chest to fall asleep. The only factor is if they cut off the circulation to my arm before I fall asleep and have to reposition. Than they get testy.
We’ve catsat a friends cat who sleeps on the pillow like a hat, and then wakes you up several times a night by head-butting your face. It was cute but…
I used to share my bedroom with my cats. Then I married a man who had never had pets before. He declared the bedroom off limits. I had told him that my oldest cat, Sneakers, had lived with a Siamese and picked up some English. He didn’t believe me. Fast forward to our first night home after honeymoon. Three very confused cats when I said goodnight and then shut the door. In their faces. Oh the horror!! One very confused husband asking “Who is that?!” When the grey tabby employed his English asking “guys?guys? guys?” as he pawed under the door trying to get in. We still laugh about it 7 years later, even though Sneakers has been gone for several. He never passed on the English language lessons to his 2 housemates, so we don’t have conversations through the door anymore, but they do still paw and claw when we try to sleep in and don’t feed them according to schedule.

I think a lot of us learn to stroke, pat, and cuddle cats without really waking up.

And it looks as though Puck drinks tea late a night.

Thankfullly, mine don’t do this. Knock stuff over, yes. Meow incessantly, also yes. Poking at me, no. Not yet, anyway. :P

Luna sits on my chest with her nose near my chin. Eventually I can’t breathe and wake up…

My little 6 pound cat gives me a nip on my leg. Usually it’s because she wants a treat.

My Lily (RIP) once hooked her claw in my nostril and pulled up. I swear, she was once trained for hostile interrogation.

I also get toys in the bed so we can play. I wake up with a few around me each morning. Got to play first. Priorities.

I only get this when His Royal Siameseness wants my to roll over and sleep on my back so that he can have a lap to sleep on.

When my girl wants attention she pushes up against me.
Usually she uses her butt to do the pushing.

Which is why we have to de-cat the bedroom every night!

Our kitty of 23 years, Spike, used to wake my daughter by pulling an earbud out of her ear then meowing loudly in her ear.
