Cicadas? Just wait till 2021 when Brood X of the 17 year ones emerge in the US. It’s gonna be LOUD. The last time around I could hear the droning in the house with all the doors and windows shut, fans on and earplugs in. No way to drown out several million hollering at once. We live in undisturbed woods too…
No, they don’t go “chitter chitter”. Try driving through the East coast , Brisbane to Sydney, or down to Melbourne, in the summer, and you will hear them over the sound of your car engine and the car radio. All the time. For miles and miles and miles and
Incidentally, as far as I know, the gentlemen crickets make the noise to attract lady crickets. But if we can’t find them, and cats with superb direction finding hearing can’t track them down, how do the lady crickets find them?
A stray in my mother’s neighborhood once caught a cicada alive. Bad move. That left her with a wildly vibrating critter in her mouth that she was afraid to let go of.
One of the advantages of being hard of hearing. I can just take out my hearing aids.
Incidentally, all available support is requested from the Orb. I am presently living under a hurricane warning. Also, I work for a home healthcare company that is trying to send out a week’s worth of shipments in the next 24 hours so that our patients can get them in advance of any potential evacuation.
One of my cats has mastered the art of catching cicadas. Luckily it’s very easy to hear when she’s got one and about to bring it through the kitty door XD
We recently had a grasshopper infestation here, and the sound they made in the trees was a continuous high-pitched buzzing that never let up. It was amazing and annoying at the same time.
Apparently some dogs find cicadas delicious. One year we had to keep after Sunny, or cocker spaniel not to eat them. It was so funny seeing her with one stuffed in her mouth trying to conceal it. She might have been saying, “Honest, I’m not eating a cicada.”
A few years ago the SPCA showed some of their cats at a local pet supply store and I volunteered to take a shift as a cage cleaner/greeter/person trying to talk people into adopting one.
One day one of the crickets intended for reptiles got loose in the cat room. Big mistake, cricket! A little calico had great fun catching it when it was her turn to run around the room for exercise. I told the staff they should let crickets loose in that room on a daily basis.

From Simon and Garfunkle
Hello Nature, my old friend,
I wish your sounds would simply end!
Because a cricket somewhere leaping,
Made sounds to prevent me from sleeping!
And the sounds that were planted in my brain,
Still remain,
Within the house, no silence!
…….
Lupin and Tommy may not mind,
But that darn cricket I must find!
If he doesn’t leap out that door,
Then I’ll find him, and he gets what-for!
I heard that crickets make good playthings, I don’t know
I’ll find out, though
If he doesn’t start
Being silent!

Lucky Lupin! Being deaf comes in handy today. Ugh, cicadas (even a cat imitating a cicada).

Look at the plus side Elvis, Tommy’s cicada imitation has drowned out the cricket.

I love hearing the cicadas in the summer. Though I would worry about getting bombarded by one.
