You did it for all of us, Bea, and we appreciate you! I need this broadcast on all channels on a regular basis for weeks before all flashbang holidays.
Fireworks started going off at 9 PM Saturday night, have not stopped, are not going to. Sigh.
I love fireworks. I love Independence Day. Every year I read the Declaration of Independence, including the names of every man who signed it, and I reflect on how many of them died, how many were left destitute, how many sacrificed everything they had. It was a turning point in human history. In the evening I go to the fireworks show and I enjoy every moment. The bangs that don’t just hit your ears, but vibrate right through your chest. Colors and light shimmering and shining. The smell of the powder if you’re close enough to the launch site. The finale that bursts into a riot of sound and light at the final send off. I LOVE IT! If loving fireworks is wrong, I don’t want to be right!
I have been reading your work for so long Georgia and I love every panel. 10 points to you for putting the comment about fireworks and even if Lupin doesn’t know what what you mean. I would like to humbly request that you do a book of holiday story lines and so we could have the January New Year’s story lines all grouped together year by year and then of course the same thing for Valentine’s Day every other holiday that you have done because sometimes you do you know a week’s worth of stories and sometimes it’s a whole blessed month with wonderful BCN stories revolving around Halloween or Christmas and all these wonderful things. Of course I’m including May the 4th be with you day. I would love to buy that book. I’m working at getting a whole Georgia Dunn collection, but that one would top them all. Maybe bring out 12 separate books one for each month’s holidays and of course the calendar pictures. I humbly ask that you consider this request Georgia Dunn.Fellowship of the Orb please upload this if you are also interested. Thank you
I think fireworks are illegal in my state and all the cities. As long as folks can go to the reservation and buy sticks of dynamite it will never end. The police can’t arrest everyone. The ones who set off all the fireworks do not give a damn about veterans with PTSD, dogs, cats, or children, only their own selfish desires, liberty and freedumb. Just tear up money and light it on fire.
We live on a grassy hill and we have fire warnings every summer. Neighbors have set our hill on fire four times, three times with fireworks. Sure they’re beautiful, but they are definitely not worth becoming homeless over. That, and the idiots across the street have already been setting them off for three days and scaring our poor cats!
Yesterday it seems every place I dropped off a delivery there was a rabbit playing in the front yard. Then at one place they had the TV on with a news story about keeping your pets from freaking out on the Fourth.
Got me wondering how animals that aren’t pets get through it every year. Like all those rabbits. Or the coyote I met around midnight tonight who had decided to explore the middle of a secondary arterial street.
Nice try with the Reverse Psychology there, Beatrix, but be careful! Some folks out there might take you LITERALLY !! I heard some fireworks going off just now!
I don’t mind fireworks now that I’m retired, but when I had to get up at 3:30 am to be at work at 5:00 it was annoying to say the least. The strange thing is that we don’t have as much noise as we used to. I guess the people doing it either grew up or moved away.
Also, thank you so much for all the birthday wishes. I had a wonderful day at a family gathering (with an ice cream birthday cake from the Dairy Queen!).
My neighbor set off fireworks last year and my dog/pictured was a wreck. I have warned him to NEVER do it again and if he did I’d be calling the police. And he loves to come over to see Honey, I hope he realizes I wasn’t kidding. While fireworks can be beautiful the celebration of war just makes me cringe.
What about thunderstorms? They get noisier and they can be dangerous too. One or two days of fireworks in a year shouldn’t be utterly unbearable. Don’t be such a hypocrite, Beatrix. If you was raising awareness about handling fireworks safely, it would be another thing, but this isn’t about that at all but you just tries to demonise spritely folks celebrating with fireworks.
Elvis walking like a real cat, carrying Beatrix like a mom cat carries a kitten, oh!!! So adorable! And check out the frame between panels 5 & 6; it’s jagged from the explosions! Wow!
Yes!! Bea is great! Now that the pooch is deaf it’s not a problem for him, but leave it to the professionals on a schedule and (most) everyone can be happy.
My next door neighbor is a veteran with many health issues due to her years of service. Most important today, she has ptsd. She has made sensible plans to have ear phones on with music to drown out the sudden bursts of gunfire and fireworks in our neighborhood.
Even though I love to set off my lame legal fireworks in broad daylight on July 4th, this comic actually brought tears to me eyes. Good for you, Beatrix.
I dont mind the commercial fireworks displays. I do mind the kids walking around til 2 am with firecrackers, keeping both me and mt dog awake. And its St Louis’s favorite game… was that fireworks or gun shots.
Normally I’d be indifferent about this, but yesterday when out firing off our own humble set of fireworks with family, all the fireworks everybody else were firing off in our neighborhood were so loud, it was not only hard to converse with each other because of all the bangs, but it also started to hurt my ears after awhile.
And so if we’re to the point where even the humans are getting detrimentally bothered by the noise of fireworks…then maybe we need to be rethinking how we do fireworks these days.
And it’s definitely a more recent change, because I can distinctly recall this not being such a big problem back in my youth, living in the same town.
Of course, it’d undoubtedly help if the town would actually start enforcing it’s own firework rules on what should be getting fired off or not, but that’s honestly only part of the problem here.
Oh this is my favorite! I despise fireworks – they scare the animals, disrupt habitats, and pollute the air and ground. And my neighbors must spend a fortune every year on professional grade fireworks that they fire off for 4-5 hours!! It’s a nightmare.
To the people who say “it’s just one day a year”. First, it isn’t. People will set off their bang-bangs several nights prior. Second, this is also when a lot of dogs run away and if the shelters are overcrowded some will have to be put down. No one should be forced to take extra steps to protect their pets just so YOU can set off explosions for fun. Third, think about the people with PTSD or have other mental issues that can be triggered by the noise. At that point you’ve gone from being merely selfish to sadistic.
To those people, I hope someone decides to celebrate a day by playing your least favorite music outside your home on an 80s style boombox! Maybe you’ll learn something about empathy then.
Just as I started reading this, the jerk down the block set off yet another of the loud, horrible fireworks that go BOOOOOM, scaring the heck out of everyone in the neighborhood. At one o’clock in the afternoon. You can’t even see the pretty colors when you set them off during the day, so I have to assume that the point is just to terrorize his neighbors.
The explosions started in my neighborhood last night and tonight will sound like a war zone. Luckily I normally stay up late so it won’t disturb my sleep, but my dog will be scared. If it were only the legal fireworks shows it would be fine, but of course it’s not.
The claim of triggering PTSD in veterans is inaccurate, and the first time I ran into it was from a Stolen Valor individual— never served, claimed to have war-based PTSD. That individual was abusing the love and consideration of people who respect the military in order to go after something that gave others joy, and lied to do it. (Yes, I am still steamed at such abuse of trust and good will.) Now perfectly well-meaning individuals are, with every good intention on earth, spreading the claim. Sometimes by confronting PTSD veterans for their lack of consideration of PTSD veterans.
What does trigger PTSD is things like other drivers being erratic, or parking in unusual places, or turning without signaling, or coming up to a stop and not slowing down; piles of things in unusual places without an obvious reason. Cars or tents under an overpass? VERY serious trigger, especially if there are people around them behaving oddly. People being confrontational without obvious cause, while they are doing normal activities. (Yes, that last one is either ironic, or very darkly humorous.)
Because that is behavior strongly associated with IED and suicide bomber attacks, which is the primary source of injured, PTSD veterans.
The claim seems to get legs mostly because of the Hollywood archetype of “Vietnam Veteran” that is constantly having flashbacks any time a car backfires. Since actual Vietnam veterans are who have been primarily targeted for lecturing because they are the ones who usually have the really impressive private firework displays, it doesn’t hold together very well. My late uncle was quite literally blown up in Vietnam—missing for weeks—and loved fireworks, because they are controlled, they are expected, they are on his side.
A lot of critters and a lot of veterans are less than thrilled by fireworks. Yes, the noise but also the fact that the shockwave can be felt.
Also the late night fireworks, the fireworks all year long and any day of the week are less than considerate (yes, doing it does indeed make you an inconsiderate SOB).
And the fireworks at 3 or 4 in the morning and or the gunshots are going to prove just precisely what kind of special person you are.
You don’t have be a jerk all the time just because you’re able to be one.
I certainly appreciate decorative fireworks but have absolutely NO desire to hurt my hearing, so please without the booms that vibrate through everything.
I am personally not a big fan of fireworks. The sale of them is very limited in NZ, only a few days before Guy Fawke’s Night. It upsets my cats and my partner and me.
I had to share this one as a PSA! My last dog was fine with thunder for her first 5 years until she got traumatized by some fireworks in the neighborhood. She was terrified of thunder, guns, fireworks, and occasionally loud hammering after that! People just don’t seem to realize how stressful fireworks can be!
For what it’s worth, Foxy is pretty chill as she is every year. She is sleeping in her usual spot under the table near me, and I have Fireworks Anxiety Music from Calm Your Cat playing on YouTube on the big tv, 11 hour track. Meanwhile outside the usual people are setting off the usual stuff. It’s illegal but the cops never do anything. There are too many of them. There is also a legal show going on in the park so I might be hearing that too.
I’ve got friends who served in Iraq & Afghanistan. All have PTSD from moderate to severe degrees – one is agoraphobic now. I used to love fireworks; after hearing some of their stories, I don’t anymore.
If someone does live in the middle of Wyoming they shouldn’t set them off due to the fire threat. Everyone here in the West needs to be mindful that we’re living in a tinderbox this year!
For decades, you could buy fireworks in my state, but if you were a resident you were required to sign a document stating you would take them out of state to set them off.
:::nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Bob’s your uncle:::
The state legislature in its infinite lack of wisdom has made them legal on certain days, especially those around the 4th of July. Fortunately, they have allowed cities to make ordinances banning them and several local ones have continued the ban. Respect for veterans is cited as the reason.
I’d say that fireworks ordinances are a good idea. A dumb friend of mine had some this 4th, and threw out the unused ones IN THE SAME BIN WITH THE USED MATCHES! The bin blew up, and they had to buy a new bin because it had melted. I love the fireworks shows- put on by the professionals. The home fireworks are just a bad idea.
