And then, Puck likes the finer things in life, Goldie is a wide open spaces kind of gal and of course Elvis likes his privacy (much more dignified) !

We broke down and just bought multiple cotton bath mats. Cotton, so you can see the dark spot.

Lupin!? Shame on you. What possesses you to do such a thing. Are you having urinary problems? I certainly hope not.

My girl Georgie would kick all the litter out of the box, so I had to get the ones like Elvis has.

I always knew when Miss Kitty was getting a urinary infection because she would start peeing on the bathroom rug. Jasper never peed on rugs or furniture, but sometimes he would squat on the edge of the litter box and splash over the side, so I kept extra large doggie pee pads under the litter box.

Once after a swimming event, the hostess had swept up the towels and put them in the wash, so I had to leave mine behind until next visit. She presented the neatly folded towel. It became immediately apparent that one of the cats had “done a Lupin” on it.

Well, Lupin is a cat of adventure. And peeing where you’re not supposed to is just a part of that sense of daring adventure. And cleaning it up is an adventure for the People. Everybody wins!

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Elvis-Anum: What’s going on?! There’s a sign on the north litter room saying, “Closed for remodeling!”

Beatrixia: Oh, Puckmosis wanted to have a fancier litter room, so Her Majesty let him design one.

Elvis-Anum: I think I need to have a few words with Puckmosis!

    Sometime Later

Elvis-Anum: Puckmosis, we do not need a fancy-schmancy litter room! Anyway, what are we supposed to do until it’s finished?

Puckmosis: There are several litter rooms available. I just thought it would be nice to have a luxurious place to go. Why not enjoy some of the finer things?

Elvis-Anum: Oh, alright. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have one fancy litter room. What was that? A sand storm?

    Enter Lupinium

Elvis-Anum: Hello, Lupinium. Come to see Puck’s new litter room?

Lupinium: What, there’s a litter room here?

Elvis-Anum: How could you not know?

Lupinium: There’s a whole desert full of sand out there!

Our cats had covered litter boxes that we kept in the downstairs bathroom. Even with the added privacy Blossom didn’t appreciate it when the silly humans had to use the bathroom while she was in there!

All fun set aside, if cats do this there could be several reasons. Something as simple as the little box is too close to the food/water (“Don’t pee/poop where you eat” is actually a thing, not just a saying) – easy fix. Among other things that could be wrong is that peeing outside of the box could be as simple as the cat thinks the litter is too dirty, but it might be signs of a kidney problem too.

O.T. Due to yesterday’s experience, I won’t try to separate things today. I’m sorry some folks were worried because the reply to my O.T. heading yesterday got moved down a few slots. Continuing to do well, the cough is diminishing; a good thing because the sore muscles from coughing hurt more than the actual incisions! I think that tomorrow I’ll be able to go back to my own house, and my kitties. And a nice thick pillow to protect my belly from said kitties. Thank you all for being so encouraging, it really does lift my spirits!

Georgia posted this yesterday in case anyone missed it. Note that she specifically mentions Lupin! Georgia Dunn CREATOR about 19 hours agoI have to confess here anecdotally: In real life, we have one large box in the bathroom and two small ones under the stairs. We scoop twice a day, and that has worked for us.

I know the “one for every cat, plus one” is the preferred formula often from vets and shelters, and that’s why I shared it. I know many people it works well for! I do think it really depends on the cats themselves sometimes too.

In Lupin’s case, he took 4-5 litter boxes to mean EVERYTHING WAS A LITTER BOX. It’s taken us a long time to retrain him, and it’s still a struggle sometimes. (…Keep that in mind for tomorrow’s strip, lol!) Go with what works for your home! And in real life, Tommy and Sophie actually do have beautiful cabinet boxes like the one in this week’s strip! I tried it and Elvis and Puck both seemed to really like it. Lupin sprayed down the walls like the box was on fire and he was responding to a call, lollll. It did not work for Lupin (and this was before Goldie). It would have been a great option for Elvis and Puck! It truly is all about options and what works for the cats in our homes.

I also must credit my editor Shena Wolf with the joke in this last strip. She said it once, during a talk around litter boxes, and I laughed so hard. The Man and I still say it to each other often, when scooping. I feel like many cat owners have had that feeling once or twice. It felt extra funny to give the line to Puck as an optimistic “ah, the future is bright” kind of moment, lol!

We had a cat that peed on the baseboards. Not spraying, peeing. She also loved being vacuumed with the upholstery brush.

I have one that pees on the bathmat. As long as I remember to hang it over the shower, no problem. If I forget and leave it on the floor, she takes that as an invitation. After reading all of these comments, it occurred to me to wonder if she thinks it is a pee pad. She was a feral kitty, and had kittens just days after we rescued her, so we used pee pads along with a litter box while she was simultaneously adjusting to being an indoor cat and to being a mama. Bath mats are the same approximate size and shape as pee pads, and probably feel similar under her little paws. And bath mats live in the bathrooms, where her pee pads were. I think this group just helped me solve a problem we’ve been dealing with for almost seven years!

Yeah, we had to go with the open design. Smokey absolutely refused to use the hooded privacy pan. Guess it was too much like a pet carrier and she hates doing her buisness in a pet carrier. Loves going in them, but hates doin g her buisness in them.

Penelope prefers the laundry pile, and she makes no distinction between clean and dirty. Any fabric that ends up in the floor is fair game. My boys prefer to go outside on the lawn, and Jellybean will use an actual litter box if she happens to be indoors.
