I hope we hear from the rest of the women—Sophie, Baba, Goldie, Lady Jane, Tillie, and Freddie. I hope Ora Zella is soaking this up like a sponge. I’m not sure the young women of today truly understand what life was like for the older women in their lives. I can remember coming back to school after being out for 2 weeks with one of the dreaded childhood disease, asking the teacher for help getting caught up on the math I’d missed, and being told, “Don’t worry, honey. Girls don’t need math.” I can remember the ear that the boys got to make potato batteries for their science project and the girls got to plant flower seeds in milk cartons. I remember wanting to take wood shop instead of home economics and being told wood shop was too dangerous for girls. I can remember not getting a chance to say goodbye to the best teacher I ever had for both grades 5-6 on the last day of school because her pregnancy had begin to show and pregnant women were not allowed to teach children. That was in 1963.
Signs of spring! Yesterday I heard the ree-ree-ree of newborn raccoon babies coming from my abandoned storeroom! This family have reared babies in there five years running now, so it’s not a surprise, but it is a delight. They’re three days later this year than last year. Raccoons are born with their eyes closed, like kittens, and stay in their nests quite a while before venturing out. I usually see them outside about the first week of June.
You go girls, and Burt! GoComics, used to have a platform for new comics, that the cartoonists paid for. I wanted to join but, suddenly, they stopped it. It was kind of a way to get your toe in the door. I wish they’d bring it back.
Let us also remember to maybe not share so much of our personal lives with our Orb family! Trolls just looove to get their hands on people who believe in God, are non-meat-eaters, have some sort of disability, feel the death of a loved one- especially if it’s an animal that died, etc. Do not give them any handle to spew their filth. Like maizing said, flag ’em & move on!
Marie and I are watching an excellent mini-series on Apple TV called Lessons In Chemistry. The show is set in the 1950s in the United States, and the protagonist is a woman chemist who gets a cooking show on local TV. Instead of talking down to her female audience, she lifts them up. In one episode, the woman has the audacity to wear pants on TV! Of course, the male owner of the station has a fit. Sometimes, you forget how restrained women were back then, that a pair of pants in the workplace could get you fired.
I am thinking about what Burt said in today’s strip; he’s a cool cat that loves women. Well, Burt. I’m right there with you, but I might add that I respect women and believe their time is now.
Are y’all sure about all of this ? Printing strips from dudes only?? Idk. Sounds like fake news to me. I would think that they (powers that be) would print whatever strips had the most readership (is that even a word?). Mo’ readers, mo’ money, right? Not trollin’, just sayin’.
This too, shall pass. We will be back to our regularly scheduled program shortly & likely have some newbies to welcome to our happy lil break from IRL.
On this first day of Spring, sending extra love and hugs to all the Orb, Georgia, the Children, and her clowder – special shout out also to Burt, Tabitha and the robber mice.
I know it’s spring because at 3 a.m., my cat got restless and seemed anxious. (She’s a neutered female). At 5 a.m. I heard it, the love song of one or more cats, luckily drifting away. “Ah Spring, when a young cat’s fancy turns to thoughts of love.”
So as a follow up to yesterday. How reliant is a typical comic strip on print media income as compared to online income? Is it realistic to expect the online income to eventually replace the print media? Is it the abrupt shift that is the main issue? As theprint media declines is there a suitable replacment strategy?
I dont know if its an anti woman thing as much as the comics they are writing are not hitting with the readers. BCN, and Phobe and her unicorn are very popular so is For better or worse. Cathy however has run its course. I also agree we need to get rid of older dead comics to make way for new ones. Peanuts has been over for 20 years or so and yet its in constant reruns. Garfeild has stopped being funny for years but it sells. I think if new women writers had comics that readers want they would do fine. Its just finding the right readers to pick them up. I dont care who writes the comic as long as I enjoy it. I dont care if its male female or what ever. But thats just me.
@Fennec! At the Disco like an old comment I made that had a link to a GoComics page with cartoons by 11 women on the site at that time. I thought it would be appropriate to share it again, https://www.gocomics.Com/comics/lists/1722852/11-women-cartoonists-we-love
I deleted the “patreon” post and send my sincerest apologies to Georgia. My intent was not to give away content for free but just to remind all of us who love her and usually step up to defend her and the orb when we do get the occasional troll to take the high road and ignore them.
well I do hope my post did not offend anyone as that was never my intent. I just was expressing my thoughts on how we can get new creators a chance to shine. I am glad Go comics gave BCN a shot or I would not have found it. We need more sites like go comics where new talent can get out and not be crushed by the syndicates that seem to only run old comics. And yes if anyone has suggestions for female written strips I would gladly read and support them
This is what they called a “girls’ club” at my wife’s work. She was a mechanical designer and worked mostly with men. She retired in 2007. The atmosphere was about the same as it was when she started 30 years before. She’s smarter than most of the engineers she worked for.
According to my research, there’s quite a few outages. The internet has been strange lately. First Facebook outage, then Windows refusing to update, Google not returning any results, Microsoft giving time outs and now Gocomics was unresponsive IF it could be reached.
When my husband and I tried to buy our first home in 1971, no bank would give us a loan because I might get pregnant and have to stop working. Then when I did get pregnant, 3 years later, I had to have a doctor’s note saying it was safe for me to work while pregnant. I was a secretary so what kind of danger was there in an office?
I’m a Houston Chronicle subscriber and I look forward to the comics daily, my favorite section. BCN is also a favorite. Thank you Chronicle and GoComics.

Elvis-Anum: I guess my editorial on The Danger of Shelves can wait, but it’s still a matter of importance.
Beatrixia: We always need articles on safety first. Maybe you can work on some illustrations for shelves while Tabith-Isis’ editorial runs.
Elvis: I can use this extra pile of papyrus and ink for now. Wait, how did this get here?
Sound of Giggling in the Background
Agnes-Ata: We’ll never tell!
Ta-Natash: But we’re sure you can guess. Maybe a few friends left it here as a thanks for running the editorial.
Bea: I think there are some other areas where ladies could be better represented.
At the Artisans’ Studio
Awhil-Fixit the Seventh: Thanks for helping us paint the new music chamber, Adobe Style.
Adobe Style: It was my pleasure, Wally. Iron Glove and I have some design ideas for the shelves.
Iggy: We could a few extra paws with making the furniture. Think you could help, Adobe?
Adobe Style: I don’t see why not.

Ooh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah! PUCK!
You’re taking all the sunshine away
Making out like you’re the main line (I knew that)
‘Cause I’m a cool cat
Tapping on the toe with a new hat
Ooh just cruising
Driving along like the swing king
Feeling the beat of my heart, huh!
Feeling the beat of my heart
Ooh I’m a cool cat
Coming on strong with all the chit chat
Ooh you’re alright
Hanging out and stealing all the limelight
Ooh messing with the beat of my heart yeah!
Ooh you used to be a mean kid
Ooh making such a deal of life
Ooh you were wishing and hoping and waiting
To really hit the big time
But did it happen? Happen, no!
You’re speeding too fast, slow down
Slow down, you’d better slow down, slow down
You really know how to set the mood
And you really get inside the groove
Cool cat is tapping on the toe with a new hat
Ooh just cruising
Driving along like the swing king
Feeling the beat of my heart
Feeling the beat of my heart, yeah!
Feeling the beat of my heart
Can you feel it?
Feeling the beat of my heart
Feeling the beat of my heart
Ooh feeling, feeling, feeling
Feeling every feeling.

I get that (a) it’s an allegory, (b) it’s a joke, and © the Robber Mice don’t exactly have a rock-solid moral code, but kinda rude of all of them.
