Jill: “Why didn’t you get the keys right away?!”
Paul: “I just assumed he buried them! I didn’t actually see him do it!”
Jill: “Why didn’t you search for them before you thought of starting the truck?!”
Paul: “I had a lot on my mind…”
Jill: “Maybe, if you didn’t put everything off until the last minute-”
Paul: “If you locked the keys in the truck, but I wouldn’t call you an idiot, no matter how frustrated I’d get…there, I found the keys. Can we just unlock the truck and forget about this?”
Jill: “MY PRECIOUS BUCKLES, OMIGOSH, YOU’RE ALIVE!! I THOUGHT YOU’D D-”
Paul: “He buried the keys, remember?”
Jill: “Oh, yeah…BUT HE’S SUFFERING FROM HEAT EXHAUSTION!!”
Paul: “The A/C was on, remember? If anyone is suffering from heat exhaustion, it’s m-”
Jill: “I’m keeping Buckles home with me! You go to the store by _yourself!”_
Okay, that was a story and a half. I’ll say, I do not like Jill’s character in this strip. Yeah, the punchline of the strip is that she’s worried about Buckles over Paul, as always, but considering how Buckles got them into this situation, I’m not exactly rooting for the mutt. Of course, nothing against you or your comic, Mr. Gilbert! Despite this, I’m enjoying this week-long arc. It’s a fun ride, despite the fact that the truck doesn’t go anywhere!
I’m actually surprised that the whole ‘locking the keys in the car’ thing has never happened in “Calvin and Hobbes”, because it just sounds like something that would have happened. And it also sounds like something that Calvin would find exciting.
Similar thing happened on my honeymoon…locked keys in car in Denver…got 3 more sets of keys…went to Carmel…put one set of keys in husband’s pocket..set of keys fell out of pocket into ocean…3 sets of keys locked in car…hard to believe, but we found the keys that fell out into the ocean.

And all this drama because the original publication pre-dated the widespread use of debit cards.

Seems they could wait until Buckles gets hungry and decides to leave the truck. If he can find a way to open it. I’m not sure if he can or not.
