Calvin’s argument sounds somewhat logical, but it seems like there is a bigger concern. If we die and it turns out that we are ushered into the presence of Almighty God, it is we mere humans who will be instantly awestruck, and we will be the ones who will suddenly turn into big chickens.
@kuren444: If God is really an old man with a white beard, the consequences shouldn’t be too major, except that in Heaven we may have to speak a little louder and remind him of a few things from time to time. Could give new meaning to some Biblical passages, such as, “Shout to God with loud songs of joy,” and, “God will remember your sins no more.”And, like Calvin, perhaps we should be concerned with our actions in this life – especially toward old men with long white beards (Santa Claus and the like).
I think the real question needs to be asked.“Is Mom that bad a cook ?”And is Calvin merely deflecting the point using a theological argument as the basis for the misdirection in consideration of Mom’s feelings …
“Don’t Blame Me!”I didn’t start it; neither did I instigate or incite anyone or anything, but it’s not because I’m chicken!Hobbes is ‘responsible’! :o)
What’s for dinner?Whether Calvin eats his dinner or not might have temporal consequences, and he should deal with it, but eternal consequences are everlastingly significant and it would be wise for Mom and/or Dad to respond accordingly!
God might not be a chicken, but he is a bird, metaphorically speaking (in a figure)!“He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings shall you trust…” Psalm 91:4a
“Don’t worry, be happy. When you are dead, you are dead.”“…what advantage is it to me if the dead don’t rise (get resurrected)? Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”from I Corinthians 15:32“Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labor the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:15
@LX013,“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God.”I John 5:13
Wow – It’s amazing how many people were up in the middle of the night contemplating the profoundly disturbing subject of Heaven, Hell, and Giant Chickens.Perhaps we should have begun with the Biblical quote, “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life,” so that everyone could get some sleep.Sound theology such as that can be of great comfort to all who had chicken for dinner last night.
<< Dogsniff said: "If a river in heaven is blocked on purpose, is it a God dam? >>@Dogsniff: Are you implying that, in that case, God would be a giant beaver? The theological implications of that one are staggering.:>)
Who are WE to question the man upstairs? maybe if we look inside ourselves instead of others to find who we are and thus who exactly God is. although thanks Calvin about reminding us what REALLY matters.
If you live your life being the best person you can be, and you help when help is needed, you have lived a good life. The reality is that none of us truly knows what comes after this world.
If it’s all mute, you can stick a sock in it. I think you believe it’s all moot. As I keep telling the wife, a mute point is what you put in the bell of the trumpet.
“Though true story, a vengeful priest blessed bread and then gave it to someone to sell and the church was obligated to buy it all back . . .”
++++
Hmmm. At first blush, I doubt it’s true. I’d think they might censure the priest, but blessed bread shouldn’t be a problem. Unless it was the Body, and those buying it were planning to desecrate it. Even then, the sin would be on those involved—but it’s their outlook, not the Church’s problem.
Regarding Calvin: He’s simply righteously indignant at having to eat chicken for dinner rather than ice cream. He was hoping for divine intervention, but he has no basis for putting faith in that, so for his part it’s simple credulity.
Reading most of these comments above helps me see large changes in our country since the end of WW2. During that time I saw many men praying in their fox holes realizing their end may be near.
@bmonk: Martin Luther used the phrase, “We are to fear and love God.” Perhaps that would describe how believers would feel, coming face-to-face with God for the first time. It seems like all humans, regardless of their previous beliefs, would initially be speechless. All would suddenly understand the feeling of true humility for the first time. And all would look back at the portions of their lives and their resources that they had wasted, and feel like turkeys.
I grew up as the youngest of 10. At that time in that place, there was no such thing as a “picky eater.” You ate what you could while it was there. So to me, the idea of a 6 or 7 year old boy turning down chicken is just—??? Unless, as someone else postulated, Calvin’s mom is a terrible cook. My mom wasn’t much in the Stove Sweepstakes, but we ate without comment—-because if you stopped to comment someone would scoff your portion!!I did however start cooking when I was about 12, since she met complaints with, “So you do it, smart guy.” She had the old 3-ring Betty Crocker Cookbook from the 1940s and I basically cooked my way through it. Knowledge that has served me well all these years.
@GretchensMom: No, I haven’t heard the song, and it does relate well to today’s discussion. Other than divine revelation, imagination is the main tool that humans have for trying to grasp what is beyond the physical world. And imagination is inadequate for things that are beyond imagination.
Wow! What a hodgepodge today! Great job, everybody! As a firm believer in God, I will simply make this personal statement: I do not want to face him. I love him, but…if I can’t look at the sun without burning my eyes out, then how could I possibly wish to be in the presence of the Creator of that sun and billions of galaxies of billions of suns? I think this would vaporize me into constituent building blocks of matter. I’ll pass, and believe He will understand and not be offended. :—)
Are you sure we didn’t grow up in the same church in the same town in Oklahoma? Unless you are a lot younger than I am, you didn’t wear slacks, jeans, or shorts, either.
If Faith gets one through the day then that’s cool. If you need an excuse to be “good” that’s cool too. I put my faith in myself and my fellow man. And the sun. I believe those things exist. -if there is a god, I’ll pay my dues then. If there is no god, no one will be the wiser anyway, but at least I don’t have men guilting me along the way.
If you actually believe in some all-powerful god, you have the IQ of a chicken… “The lower your IQ, the more likely it is that you believe in god”. Cut and paste that into google.
@GoldenRoya,Paul was quoting from Isaiah, but he used the verse in his own context relating to the necessity of the resurrection from the dead. Otherwise, we might as well live it up until we die. “You only go around once in life so get all the gusto you can.”I don’t disagree with you about your Ecclesiastes quote or Blaise Pascal, but my comment still stands on its own merits.
