Brings back memories of my older brother digging a “foxhole” in the front yard one morning. Mom had gone to work and when she came back at 2 it was about 3 feet wide and 4 feet deep. He just couldn’t understand what all the fuss was.
Is there any kid in the western hemisphere who didn’t, at one time, try to dig a hole to China? We stopped when we hit the water table at about 9 feet.
Strange beings live in the center of the earth. I learned that from reading Tarzan and other comics. Calvin had better bypass the center. As SUGAR said, he can’t get to China going through the center. Hope he has GPS (moving the episode forward it time) (besides, GPS uses satellites and can’t work more than a few feet under the surface).
That’s one hell of a shovel – since they have a paved driveway (as we know from the winter pictures of his snowmen).
He SHOULD be digging where Dad want’s to put the pool – then all that labor would be to a good purpose. ;-)
Oh, hell. Who are we kidding. He will dig three scoops and then some shiny keys or a squirrel will distract him and he’ll go tearing off somewhere else.
Uh, Calvin, if you could come out on the other side, digging through all that molten metal, you would not be seeing China; you`d be smack in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Australia. Oh well, happy digging.

I wonder how many of costs incurred by Calvin’s behavior are tax deductible.

You won’t end up in China, you’ll end up in the Indian Ocean.
Assuming you don’t burn up in the earth’s core, of course.

Hopefully he has enough energy. I’m not too sure he does.

meanwhile in China, a boy named Kǎ Ěr Wén is probably digging a whole to the U.S.

Digging gets easier when you reach magma, because that’s liquid.

They never struck me as a dirt driveway type of family.

Calvin better hope he can make it to China before Dad makes it out of the house!

Must have been tough digging through the concrete.

He’s going to need a bigger shovel.

Good point, Calvin. Dad’ll likely blow his top regardless of where you dig.

The driveway isn’t paved?
LEOKEV about 6 years ago
We had a dirt driveway for years, until dad broke down and paid for gravel. Of course, this was out in the country.

“He’ll get mad no matter where we dig”
Is it just me or does that kind of sound like an idiom or something?

if Calvin payed attention at school he’d know that he’d have to dig a hole 8000 miles deep, and he’d be digging UP half of that journey…

Lawns are MUCH easier digging than driveways. Though driveways may have fewer roots…

He will need a lot of energy to work off the damage to the car later.
