You want to know what the funny thing is about this strip? Winters are actually becoming more like this. Well, in my neck of the woods anyways. When I was a kid and when this strip first appeared in newspapers, it was pretty much a guarantee that the ground would be covered in snow by the time December rolled around. But these days? Not so much.
I know that this is from the past and not intended to reflect today’s world, but the “fight” and subsequent accusations could be a metaphor for how the Fat Orange Clown is embarrassing himself and the country.
We view it through Susie’s eyes. Fits too if you change reindeer to GOP elephants.
A typical December here in Brockton MA. The snow usually doesn’t come until well AFTER Christmas, and more often than not Valentine’s Day is the wintery holiday around here! (This strip was originally printed on December 2, 1990.)
My girlfriend was wearing a pair of Reindeer dropping earrings that a friend from Alaska had given her. We were on the Hood Canal, with friends; all of us tossing back a few tall cool ones, with chasers. In front of a roaring after dark fire we were grilling and consuming fresh oysters that we had just harvested. The next morning we all woke up and my girlfriend noticed that one of her earrings was missing. We all searched for it, with no success. We pondered whether one of us had consumed it, thinking that it was an oyster.

Santa’s stables are like the Augean Stables but less smelly because everything freezes.

Hobbes in his plush form is surprisingly strong? Or Calvin is surprisingly weak? You make the call.

Susie is happy. When Santa holds off on presents at Calvin’s house, it means more toys for the next stop.

Normally, I’d agree. But what if Santa still has a lot more of those reindeer turds left over?

Is Calvin related to “The Born Loser”?

Love the second last panel & Susie’s comments.

Susie’s casual observation that he somehow seems to be LOSING is another enduring memory of this comic for me. Just so hilarious.

Not sure if giving a girl ‘muchas smoochies’ would really look good to Santa, Hobbes. It would look more like harrassment.

“Moochas smooches” has been a common term in my house since reading this strip in the 90’s. It’s weird how some things stick like that.

So it appears that the friend of my enemy, is not necessarily my enemy. Ironic twist, there.

One of my all time favourites, there is hope for Calvin yet that he keeps losing to Hobbes, but there’s a long way to go still before he grows up.

Everyone knows December snow isn’t ripe.

And people think Calvin and Susie will get married? If I were her, I’d ask my folks to move out of state!

“I’m not losing. He cheats.” Where have I heard that before?

All I can say is this one strip is still pretty darn funny after 30 or so years.

Hobbes is so adorable. I love him in the last panel, as well as his snarky comment. ;P

Interesting to see what others see when Calvin is “fighting” Hobbes.

A few years down the line and Hobbes can see the change in Calvin’s view for Susie. She would grow up to become a sure damsel.
