Once you’re old enough to drive, Calvin, your lazy summer days are over. Personally, living in a city where summer means temperatures of 42ºC and over for weeks on end, I’m all about speeding up into autumn.
Hobbes understands the inertia concept well. Afterall he is feline and needs to hunt his preys. Calvin could do well with a memory switch to slow down the zooming phase and fast forward the sudden change of momentum.
Once, when I was a small child, I said, “It’s so hot; I wish it were winter.” My brother answered me, “Yeah, and in the winter you’d wish it were summer.” I decided then & there that I’d choose my season & never complain about summer being too hot.
You would think a river at the bottom of a cliff might save your life, and maybe it will, but it still hurts like he11. Pleasure is fleeting but pain hangs right in there.
Really love Cal’s ‘dips’ into philosophy. He operates on 2 levels. He typically philosophizes, even while engaged in life-threatening play, something most of us don’t do, and he’s usually right on. And few would disagree with Hobbes’ conclusion.
Also truly appreciate the drawings. There is sense of freedom from the bounds of earth even with the promise of eventual crash.
To everything there is a season. If you spend all your time wishing your circumstances were different, you will never experience the joy and beauty of where you are now.
re: stop summer – that would be 1971. I was ten and my grandparents whom I adored had moved to Florida a couple of years prior. The place was like a paradise to a young kid back then and Disney World had just opened but didn’t yet have the crowds.
Dunno about this summer stuff, Calvin. Summer = No Snow Goons or laser aim snowballs to the back of Suzy’s brain bucket. No snoozing in front of the fireplace for Hobbes. Nope, Count The Count as a Fall and Winter fan all the way.
Calvin contradicts himself. He wants time to stop and have the days “stay just the way they are” while simultaneously wanting time to speed up so he can attain driving age.
Calvin I am your future generation, I got a drivers license when I was 50 years old, my lazy summer days were over and it was 477789 degrees out I hope you live and wither away like how i am right now, now i wish you luck and hope you survive, I left a note for you

Plot twist: It’s actually aging that’s stopped and it’s why Calvin is still a kid!

When you are young, you want to speed up life. When you are old you want to slow down life and remember the fun you had when you were young.

What is he talking about? Calvin has been six years old for 37 years now.

There is a non sequitur comic that perfectly show off Hobbes comment in the last panel.

So true. It’s not the fall that kills you. It’s the landing.

Given how hot the summer is, I think that they should stay in that nice, cool water for at least a panel or two!

Headed for another record high today and tomorrow and Tuesday and Wednesday. 5:31 am and 66F outside. Air quality good, so windows open.

Life goes by fast enough without wishing for time to be gone. The year has gone by fast enough for me in fact I wish it would slow down.

I’m afraid driving-age Calvin would not be funny at all. He’d be texting his tiger while driving, for one thing.
