Calvin is an ignoramus (and by implication, Watterson). There WERE fewer people to begin with. The population grew as a result of people generating sufficient food and wealth to support a greater population. We are wealthier than ever. And before anyone says “how dare you value wealth”, I sure don’t see anyone giving up any wealth “for the sake of the planet”. Also, wealthier people have fewer kids. As for “even distribution of resources”, Hong Kong was nothing but a ROCK, and it became enormously wealthy. Conversely, Africa has HUGE resources, and it’s mired in poverty. So much for that excuse.

Is Calvin advocating for human rationing there?

There were fewer people to begin with, but more animals. An increase in one seems to go with a decrease in the other.

Today’s strip, like yesterday’s, shows that Calvin is very knowing in some ways. As has been said many times, he would do very well in school but he lacks interest and motivation.

One of my favourite books about animated cartoons is Masters of Animation by John Grant which I have mentioned on this site before. In the chapter on the great Chuck Jones, John shows that Chuck had a similar problem in his relationship between high intelligence and schooling that Calvin has:-

“Oddly for such a highly literate and intelligent child, Jones dropped out of high school – seemingly just because he found it boring – continuing his formal studies at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.”

Some readers have noted similarities between Calvin and Ralph Phillips – the day dreaming boy who appears in some Chuck Jones cartoons notably the Oscar-nominated From A to Zzzzzz. Ralph reappeared in another commercial cartoon and then in two army recruitment cartoons – one of which shows him as an adult. He also appeared in a compilation cartoon called Adventures of the Roadrunner which mixed new Ralph Phillips footage with classic Roadrunner footage and footage from From A to Zzzzzz.

Another wise cartoonist had two characters discussing why there are starving people, when we have the capability of feeding everyone. “No money in it.”

The free market…not the corporatist crony the TRUE free market id the best way to equitably and justly diatribute reaources. Collectivist systens (socialiam and fascism) ALWAYS enrich ansld empower the elite at the expense of all the others.

As for treating each other well, that comes from Christ and the true golden rule (not the Walz version). Collectivist systems (as pushed by dems) always reject Christianity. Christianity promotes charity and justice.

Hand this cartoon to anyone who says “intelligent design.”

Actually, the world was designed that way. Man was not given permission to eat animals until Genesis 9:3, and it was basically a concession, not permission. Basically, if man did not need to eat animals, he would have done it anyway. The drinking of blood was a ceremony of pagans to get the animals power and life into themselves. The eating and drinking of other humans the same thing. Disgusting and brutal, and that is what we do when we seperate ourselves from our Creator. The concession was to minimize our passions and desires. But the Israelites were commanded not to drink the blood like the pagans.

Why or why do people have to start with the political comments? Why? This is a COMIC section, please try and leave it at that. I read it to escape from all this BS !

Fewer people and animals would not mean organisms didn’t need to eat each other to survive. Maybe if there were no people or animals at all, and every life-form could photosynthesize.

It scares me how much I agree with Calvin on this subject!

It is, indeed, a sad testimony to the human mindset, that so many cannot leave their political rantings, ravings, and rhetoric at the door, when reading a comic that has absolutely nothing to do WITH politics. The cartoonist did NOT “open the door,” with his commentary. People seem to interpret even the most innocuous, and innocent comic to reflect their own views.It’s a sad life, indeed, when this is the only thing their lives seem to revolve around.
