Cathy: The first ten pounds lost don't count anyway because they're family. Irving: Family? Cathy: They've been gained and lost a zillion times. They're too familiar. How will you be at losing pounds ten through thirty?? The stubborn, non-family pounds you've never been thin enough to confront?? Anyone can kick relatives out! HA, HA! Let's see you give the boot to strangers! Irving: I want a diet buddy with less experience!!
Cathy and Irving are moving to the stage of marriage.Being a retired government auditor, I did the percentage of how long I have been married to being single. I have been married 93% of my adult life, minus childhood, teens and college years. Seeing her every day for a few weeks, we knew. She said it was too early at three months. Her sister made me get the ring in six months. She wore a Mexican style white wedding dress at a Navy Chapel wedding. She had four Naval Officers in Dress Whites crossed swords so she and I could walk through into marriage. When do you know you love someone? The surgeon asks if he should he take out your wife’s thyroid if he thinks it is cancerous. Your Life stands still. You are with her in the ER. She has a blood clot in her leg. You pray it doesn’t break loose and go to the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or stroke. Your Life stands still. Those are the moments you realizes how much you love this woman for 40 years. That is Marriage.
