VACATION FUN Mom and Dad: We dreamed of an "instruction-free" vacation. It took us 57 tries over a ten-day period to buy plane tickets. Cell phone: Press the pound key after your four-digit locater after your 35-digit member code. Mom and dad: Then we hit the self-serve e-ticket check-in. The rental car had an electronic navigational system which insulted us in a foreign language after our 26-minute effort to start the computerized ignition. GPS: IDIOTAS! Mom and Dad: We couldn't open the door to our room. Dad: Arrow up! No. Arrow down! No. Arrow up! Mom and Dad: We also couldn't make a call, hear a message or adjust the air conditioner. Then we tried to turn on the TV. TV Remote: To access the option menu, press the select function. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Mom: Isn't there any place left where lessons aren't required?? Dad: Please send a manual on how to get there.
I find the controls on most rental cars reasonably easy to locate an use – but figuring out how to open the lid to the gas tank can be a real challenge. There is a nice arrow on the gas gauge to let you know what side of the car the tank opening is on but no handy arrow to whatever button or leaver you need to open it. Last rental did not have a leaver – you simply pressed on the lid itself. Who would have guessed we don’t worry about gas thieves any more!
Another beautiful day today. The predicted rain did not arrive so thought I would have some fun – expanding on the 2 minute demo I had from my neighbour on operating the back hoe currently attached to his tractor. It took a long time but managed to dig a 1’ deep trench about 25 feet long. I am sure anyone who operates this kind of equipment would have fallen down laughing if they were watching. Still, the job is done and the trench is even back filled with clear stone. Now we should not get a pond on the lawn in that spot any more. Next, top soil and grass seed. Somehow I think rebuilding our retaining wall at the beach is a job that will never end.
I hope you had fun this Sunday afternoon. Have a great rest of the day.
