What?!? Why would that be a problem? You can’t see it. You can’t touch it. That seems like a safe, creative way of dealing with a ridiculous rule! Props to Josh and the team for being creative and working out a solution that worked for everyone and supported the spirit of a badly written, poorly thought-out rule!

We had an earring issue in the league I refereed in. A girl got hit in the side of the head with the ball and it ripped her earring out of her ear lobe (lots of pain and permanent disfigurement). Only takes one true incident to change a “poorly thought-out rule” to something that actually makes sense.

For those of you familiar with Bertha, the grandmother in Cleats, today is the real Bertha’s birthday. I’m sure she won’t mind me revealing that she’s turning 99.

Empty field, no adults. Kids play. Problem solved. Not a fan of kids sports leagues- I think they are too often more for the grownups than the kids.

@andymeijers - I agree that the game would be a lot better without the parents there, but safety is first and foremost. No earrings, no jewelry, no bracelets or necklaces! I have seen quite a few injuries when the referees didn’t enforce the rules. Do you think it hurts any less when a child gets hit in the ear with the ball, just because a piece of tape is protecting the earring?? All of the rules are there for a reason.
