Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for October 07, 2012
Transcript:
Alice: This is the Blisshaven Academy, a preschool, the scene of my daily toil. Alice: That's the official crest It shows a preschooler rampant on a field of green, clutching a crayon in each hand. Beneath is a banner with the school motto, "A little learning." Nara: How do you know all this stuff? Alice: My mom read the school brochure to me and my brother Petey went here. Nara: Petey did? Alice: You can still see the scratches his fingernails made on the sidewalk when he was dragged into school one memorable monday. Dill: So much for my theory about the giant chicken.

Alice is so helpful to us (and Nara and Dill) with her exposition of the history and motto of Blisshaven Academy! But it is a little saddening to see Dill’s theory of the Giant Chicken refuted….

And I have a feeling this sentiment is shared with most comic strip authors.

Hi, gang. Is this strip being rerun from the beginning? I just got into Cul-de-Sac a few months ago, on the tail end, so to speak. I like it a lot!

Minor nitpick: I wish there had been 10 years. It’s only been 5 years since this ran.

Not that I don’t enjoy some other the current cartoons, but, really, nothing out there now compares to the 2 you mentioned except for something like THE FAR SIDE, which is also a “golden age” strip!

I only discovered CdS in 2010, and it has become my favorite (along with PBS and Get Fuzzy). So, I am now able to enjoy this strip (and all the comments) from the beginning. Also, today’s Sunday strip of “Dog Eat Doug” has a nice CdS tribute.

You are absolutely right. Along with The Far Side, Calvin & Hobbes and Cul de Sac are timeless masterpieces.
