the weightlifters are Athleta van Huffelen and her three daughters. Starting in the late nineteenth century, Athleta performed acts of physical strength on the stage, first in her native Belgium, and then touring Europe and America. Her daughters followed in her footsteps.
Regarding my comment yesterday, my friend who owns the rotary tool saw what I posted, and she insists that I did not have cracked heels, and that I merely had normal calluses. I think she is wrong.
A pink and angular comic, and nice to behold. But I don’t consider John Glynn’s tailpipe, wherever it may reside, a proper subject for conversation. In general I hate any topic that whizzes past my poor brain.
Re: Tuskegee pilots on the blog: The bit about including cyanide capsules in WW II escape kits is a WTF moment for me. I’ve never heard of any American pilots being given suicide pills in the ETO, and from the comments on the Shorpy site this bafles other people as well. One writer suggests that the caption was added by an ill-informed person in the US. Toni Frissell, the reporter who took the picture, was well-regarded and unlikely to have made such a mistake:

AFAIK, the only time American aircrews were given cyanide pills was before the atomic bombing missions. Even then the pills were not part of an escape kit, but were handed out separately, as an option to avoid torture in case of capture (The Kempei Tai and Japanese army were infamous for their abuse of prisoners, and it was reasonable to assume they’d stop at nothing to get information about the atomic bomb.)
As a guy who spent a semester and a half studying Russian (I flunked out the second semester), I can attest to the fact that Russian cursive can indeed make you cry. and the printed alphabet is no picnic, either. I mean, do you think Vlad has an easy time with the Latin alphabet?
Also, the weight-lifting ladies, at least a couple of them, have their hair done to resemble barbells. Wild.
So, I stopped by the blog today and saw a Chip working to crack a nut. I stopped back 3 hours later and the little guy is STILL GOING AT IT! Man, talk about perseverance.

Re: Blog (eel X-ray)
Seems the eel liked the surroundings, and didn’t care for the idea of eviction.
