“Relationship”? WHAT Relationship???
pseudomao about 12 years ago
Crystal’s sleeves morphed.

Not a good idea to use the Lord’s name in vain.

I just have to comment because I’m east coast, and never up early enough to get on the first page of comments. (c: Up late tonight doing a crazy freelance Russian-English translation. Goodnight, Luann lovers (doesn’t have the same ring as “Haywire Hooligans”, but what a great strip!).

Tiff turns out to be a decent pal to Crystal (really, Tiff’s only friend in school, although Ox may be becoming a friend). Knute had better not become complacent, however.
MAC45 about 12 years ago
Who would have thought that Knute was a gentleman.
Ottodesu about 12 years ago
Could be a colourist goof, but I think not. Consider Knute’s wonderfully morphing T-shirts, with varying numbers of Stooges.Perhaps that characteristic is now “catching”?
CasualObserver about 12 years ago
Knute has demonstrated the tiniest slips of courtesy on the one hand, and a truckload of crudeness on the other. This does not, in any way, shape or form, imply that he is a gentleman.
arbyisme about 12 years ago
Crystal is a true lady so is naturally attracted to a true gentleman, hence the interest. Tiffany is, as always, completely clueless.

What is cool is that he listened to his father…

I wonder if Quill pulls out chairs and opens doors… it seems we’re never to find out.

…from David Cody, associate professor of English, Hartwick College:
Members of the British aristocracy were gentlemen by right of birth (although it was also emphasized, paradoxically enough, that birth alone could not make a man a gentleman), while the new industrial and mercantile elites, in the face of opposition from the aristocracy, inevitably attempted to have themselves designated as gentlemen as a natural consequence of their growing wealth and influence. Other Victorians — clergy belonging to the Church of England, army officers, members of Parliament — were recognized as gentlemen by virtue of their occupations, while members of numerous other eminently respectable professions — engineers, for example — were not.

it seems to me that if you’re hiding the fact that you’re secretly a gentlemen, then you’re not really a gentlemen after all…...Or you know, he could just be modest.

I can totally see Tiffany breaking up with a gentleman so she can pursue an abusive relationship with an over muscled jerk. In fact I bet she’d milk it for all the tabloid exposure she could.

When will we get back to what Quil wanted to talk to Luann about?

Main theme of this strip:couples that would never happen in real life
marvee about 12 years ago
Personally, I’ve enjoyed these strips showning manners that have gone by the way. Also enjoyed Crystal’s reaction. Sure we can open doors, pull out chairs, etc, (at least we could when we were young) but it’s really a nice way to show caring. It really depends on the circumstances. If working together on some DIY project, I wouldn’t expect the kind of behavior that I would like when dressed up for a special evening out. At one extreme is the feminist who bristles at being treated differently, and at the other would be Hyacinth on Keeping up Appearances. I wouldn’t want to be either one of them.

yup – colorist error. We no longer have use the same QC/QA process that caught most slips. O well, sharp eyes out there.

I think this experience will boost their relationship big time.

“He doesn’t INSULT? How about that wonderful “YOU ODOROUS BARBARIAN!” when “defending Gunther?”-Perfect example. -He was supposed to issue a line challenging his odious behaviour but couldn’t deliver it right because it isn’t in his nature. An interesting result was the confusion this caused.-I was watching some show or other t’other day and some kid kept cursing. (or so I assumed, they kept deleting the phrases he issued). The one being insulted or cursed or whatever asked him to stop using profanity because he was so poor at it. My buddy Knute is not good at issuing insults even when provided by such experts as Gunther.

Tiffany is worried that Crystal’s relationship might suffer. She really is a good friend! Not digging at her like Crystal does to her. If the situation were reversed Crystal would sarcastically say something like ‘And are you secretly hiding that you are a lady?’ or something acidic like she always does. Oh Tiffany, you’re so good!
bronzeskater about 12 years ago
I’m curious about Tiffany’s outfit. It’s form fitting all right, but black top (no cleavage) and long black pants? That’s not the Tiffany we know!
imbaldeagle about 12 years ago
But what is Tiff’s understanding of factors involved in a relationship? Sounds as if she’s afraid that caring & good manners will sabotage such. Incredible that caring is a detriment…
