Well, pot did that to me…

and …. I have to admit… that’s why I soon stopped smoking it.Hash brownies, which may be what Jane just ate, were even worse.I ate a tiny piece of one once and swore never to do it again.

Everybody was jealous of me, and wanted my vulnerability to the effects…. but I hated it.Stopped long before most people I know ever tried it….

Sigh…. I was a failure as a hippie, couldn’t make it as a doper, I DO remember the 70’s….even though I call myself an old hippie now.LOL

Hash brownies and LSD both took (takes, of course, but it’s been a long time for me) at least 15 minutes to start to have much effect, but ’toon time is different, I guess.

I have a more serious objection to the way that brownie was handed to Jane. I don’t know what the scene was like in SF, but in Cambridge, MA, where I hung out in those days, you didn’t give someone drugs without making it clear to them that you were doing so. We may have been a bit crazy, but we weren’t irresponsible.

Chas — the “shortly” on panel three could cover that 15 minutes, or even half an hour…And I agree…. responsible people warned anyone about to consume drugs…

but there are always irresponsible people about.

(In 1967, though, there really wasn’t much of this about yet… cartoonic license….)But I was at Altamont in 1969, right near a group of people… more biker looking than hippie… passing out free small cartons of orange juice.

Luckily, I didn’t take one…they turned out to be laced with bad acid and put a few people in the hospital, including small children.

It was one of the reasons people were saying the counterculture died that day… it didn’t, of course…. but other groups were springing up.

Real hippies would never have done that…not to say that they bore NO responsibility for the violent drug culture that broke away.

And sometimes the warnings were too subtle…I ate some Indian dal once at a potluck…I’d been warned that it wasn’t for the kids…so I thought they meant it was very spicy…but that wasn’t what they meant.

I was furious…when I came back to earth.

Susan, you do so make me laugh sometimes. But seriously, I have never tried mind altering drugs, I never got the point of “seeing what happens”. I knew that for some people it could be catastrophic, why risk it for temporary distraction? Friends that did indulge turned into dopey fools – and that was the reality.

I had some friends whose mom got into the brownies. She didn’t have such a good time of it. She insisted on being taken to the hospital. They just drove her around for awhile and bought snacks to satisfy the munchies, unitl she came around,

Oh, man. Back in 1968, I had this real bad, real long bum trip. Scary. I kept thinking I saw people shooting fire hoses at me. And chasing me with dogs. And trying to make me go run around in a jungle chasing midgets in black suits. And the President was an old basset hound. I know it was a drug dream because that new show, Hawaii 5-0, was already on TV, and it was only 1968. And then this real scary pervert kind of guy came on TV and said, “Welcome to my neighborhood.” and how he wanted to be my friend. And then it got really weird. I got real thirsty, and all the water fountains had signs on them, BLACK or WHITE, and I couldn’t find one for PINK anywhere. Swore off drugs right then and there, but I still get flashbacks.

The last time I took acid was in the late 70’s. We were in a pub and there was a woman called Chrissy with us. All I remember was this thick pair of purple lips that got more and more prominent as she was speaking. She told us a Pink Panther joke which had us spell bound. I wonder if she remembers.
