A Julie Newmar mention in panel one (another Batman reference!) and a woman looking a lot like Julie Newmar in her Catwoman suit in panel two. Diggin’ it!
For those of you who may be worried about superheroes and supervillains taking over Dick Tracy, hang in there. This is part of the new story, and it’s not what you think.
Eartha Kitt did indeed play Catwoman, but I think she played Catwoman as too much of a civilized lady, rather than the amoral psychopath that Julie Newmar played her as.
I hope Belle comes to Chicago with Broadway. Maybe he Black Piraha is Belle in diguise? Belle was the hottest villianess I have encountered in the first 13 volumes of Dick Tracy I have bought. ( But being a Norwegian Badger, I am hard wired to seek out blondes)
Lee Meriwether also played Catwoman in the 1966 Movie based on the TV series ("Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb); of the three, Julie Newmar was by FAR the best and sexiest
Another new villain? OK- enough, already! It’s been 7 weeks since Moon Maid’s last appearance and almost that since the last mention of her. I’m beginning to think Joe & Mike wrote themselves into a corner on that arc and don’t know how to resolve it! Too many new introductions and loose ends since then. I almost need a program to keep track of everybody.
what i remember of julie newmar playing catwoman was she always looked like she was stoned. eartha kitt, on the other hand…could bring out the tiger in me!
OH, hottest Catwoman, Newmar by far. BUT, Ertha Kitt still had the “purrrrrrrrrrrrrfect” voice for the role. On the other hand, let’s not forget the Halle Berry Catwoman movie. Major bomb. And Batman Returns Michelle Pfeiffer is still no match for Newmar. Just my opinion.
She calls herself The Black Piranha. Now be honest, don’t you wanna Let her feast upon your flesh Yet her identity few can guess. Thrilling heist at the jewelry store I’ll deliver that bracelet to Ms. Newmar. Tracy won’t sit still for this diamond extraction Soon he, Sam and Liz will spring into action. With Broadway Bates headed to the big city Might this Black Piranha be Ms. Belle, his pretty Partner in crime, sidekick galore? Stanton and Curtis give us more, more, more!
At least in the Batman series, the villains have the same type of “super powers” Batman has. You have to import a villain from one of the other comics to get a real super villain. So, Dick Tracy should be able to defeat this one. Note to Batman villains: Stay away from Gravel Gertie’s place. It’s just not safe for crooks over thataway.
julie newmar, eartha kitt, lee meriweather, michelle pfeiffer, and halle berry.. in order best to worst catwomen (i havent seen anne hathaway’s take yet, but by costume alone she outranks pfeiffer and berry.. i’m just sayin) remember how mike said that theres gonn abe a story where regular people dress up in costumes playing at being super heroes with super powers etc…. i’m laying odds that this is the lead in to that story. you have the penguin and catwoman already…. opps, i mean broadway bates and black pirahna… i wonder who’s gonna take on the joker and riddler?
Wasn’t there a short-lived Roger Corman-produced BLACK SCORPION TV series? (Scott Valentine played a cop in it) Outfit sorta reminds me of that…although less skin.
Are these pages from Scarlet Sting comicbook we’re seeing today? Maybe Honeymoon is reading ’em?
Newmar was by far the best (and curviest) Catwoman. She was a dancer as well as an actress, and had the feline moves down cold, and there was a clear sexual attraction between her and Batman (something absent in Meriweather and Kitt’s versions).BTW – Newmar was in George Michael’s music video “Too Funky” (1992). She takes the catwalk in a black latex catsuit and long black wig. (And yes, it’s on YouTube.)I hated Kitt’s version – she played the character as just a one-dimensional villain. Yes, she could trill her ’rrrrr’s, but that does not a Catwoman make.
All this Catwoman talk had distracted me (it always does).I’m not sure where this is headed, but I’m enjoying it, and I love Joe’s Pirana! (Mee-yow!)I’m not sure where this story is going, but I’m sure Mike, Joe and Co. won’t jump the shark. (What? Jump the Pirhana? Well…)
Much as I love Julie Newmar, why is it when I read one of the posts going “Me-oww,” I think of a particular episode of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” ( reference video: http://youtu.be/Uu3a79AspGQ ) Anyway, loving the return of Broadway Bates, loving how the storyline is progressing, and totally loving Black Piranha. So there.
Tconstantine,.Yesterday you asked:.“Has Joe Staton ever drawn The Penguin? Maybe as part of DC’s late 80’s Millennium cross-over event?”.At least once, in a special “graphic novel” album called PENGUIN TRIUMPHANT, which delved into Cobblepott’s high school years, among other things..It was released to coincide, roughly, with the second Michael Keaton “Batman” movie, BATMAN RETURNS, which featured Penguin and Catwoman as the villains..PENGUIN TRIMPHANT is available at Amazon, if anyone is interested.
Julie Newmar was the cuddliest Catwoman ever.Who would be a good Moon Maid? Cuz I’m thinking Moon Maid could be the star attraction of a new Dick Tracy movie if they ever get around to making it. Any good Norwegian blonde candidates out there, SCOTTtheBADGER?
All this talk about Cat Woman has reminded me of a comedic piece of art Shelley did for a Halloween Jumble Jam on one of the boards she attends. Each of the artist submitted their favorite character from cartoons, anime, video games, etc. and then was given the character of someone else to draw, in a Halloween costume. Shelley was assigned Kagome from the anime Inuyasha. Not being a huge fan of Japanese anime, she immediately asked me who that was.I told her it was the girl on that show on Cartoon Network’s Toonami who was with the wolf demon guy and always fighting monsters. You know, the one who is always saying, “Sit Boy!”.“Oh, her. Well if he is a dog, I’ll make her a cat.”“Yeah, cat girls are popular in Japan.”Famous last words from me. Well gang, this is the result. Make sure you are not drinking anything when viewing this image. Snorting coffee is so, uncool.Kagome as a Cat Girl
I am continually amused by the hero-vs-villain aspect that comics take, which is wholly against the crminal nature. Why would any criminal dress up in a gaudy costume before committing their crimes? They wouldn’t. It makes far more sense to buglarize a target in such a way that you are neither seen nor caught. Using a theatrical name and clothing only calls attention to yourself.
I’m loving the bold direction of the strip. The knowledge and love of comic history that often informs the work is very impressive. Staton ( I promise I won’t bungle his name again; posting before morning coffee can be risky) and Curtis are doing great work.
I think the new villainess is shopping at the wrong jewelry store. She needs a nice set of “GRILLZ”; the kind where the lights go side to side. She’s got the choppers for them – she just needs to expand on her natural talent and beauty!
two things…. one, i find it odd how NOBODY caught the name of the jewelry store (“west jewelery mart”) and two, black pirhana looks like she could be the manager/female tag partner of thunderchild
