Leave it to Joy to con everybody into feeding HER guests — and making them happy about it. Then again, look who we’re talking about…

Not so fast. I don’t see any of these three ladies running for the door. All they have said so far is that they have this stuff at home, not that it is coming to the Penny’s anytime soon.I’m putting my money on Joy quadruple diluting the soup starter and serving it with a smile.

Just how much soup do they need for four women?

Even eight people if they all bring their spouses (or insignificant others, in the case of …ugh… Jerry.)

Three pounds of top sirloin for stew meat?

That’s enough for them all to have steak!

Sorry, I forgot we were in Crustwood… home of the three quart soup bowl.

Meanwhile… in the story of stone soup, there is nothing but water and a rock in the pot….

Joy has offered a “can of soup starter” (whatever that is.)

But what do you want to bet that if the others do go home to gather their contributions, when nobody’s looking, she’ll quietly put her offering back in the cupboard……. only to make it more like the story, of course…

They’ll be heading over to the Hometown Security Buffet in about thirty minutes.

I’m surprised she isn’t making a watered down ketchup soup with ketchup packet she got from McDonald’s.

It’s more like the story of the thousand monkeys with typewriters – they got something right.

“It takes a village” message…..This village has many idiots……although Joy is a crafty one; a 39 cent bag of soup starter is going to yeild a lunch she can claim with enough leftovers for her and Burl to dine on at least once.

Yes, Debby, that’s how I remember the story too. Which seems to make today’s strip rather sweet….if it’s taken at face value. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day!

Hmmm, Joy has one 39 cent can of soup starter and she can feed 8 people. ITS A MIRACLE! I’ll have to try that sometime, only the people I know will just sit there like dummies and not offer anything.

I have 3 gallon size freezer bags of tomatoes (from last summer’s garden) in the freezer. I’ll add an onion, beef ribs, can of peas, can of corn, can of green beans, bag of frozen baby limas, baby carrots and box of macaroni. I’ll have enough soup to freeze 4 quart containers and eat for a couple of weeks.

Debbie J — not sure why you think from my comment that I don’t know the story!

In the strip, she’s offering a bit of food (the soup starter.) In the story the stranger (s) contribute nothing but the “stone” and the otherwise empty pot….

so I was joking that she could justify the withdrawal of her food offer…

cos it would be more like the story if all she provides is the pot and the water.
