Good ’toon Chip! I tend to give more at this time of year and the charities tend to bombard us with requests during this season.

In fairness, there are those who work year-round not only to alleviate hunger but to teach, train, encourage so that folks can find work (in a very hard environment). On a more comical note, Tom Lehrer has Christmas words of wisdom:On Christmas day you can’t get sore, Your fellow man you must adore, There’s time to rob him all the more The other three hundred and sixty-four.

VERY WELL SAID. Why do people ONLY volunteer during Christmas & Easter? To make themselves feel better. However, having worked at shelters, I know for fact, that they are usually OVER STAFFED during those periods. When you should volunteer/donate is in the ‘off months’.Go to a homeless shelter on February 14th, and give out a valentine to each of the residents. Take food to them once a month etc....Merry Christmas folks. The Celebration of the Birth of Christ is nearly upon us! May the Lords Blessings be upon you this CHRISTmas season.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” ??#Here’s a holiday conundrum for you. What if I give a man a turkey? What then? Should I have taught him how to hunt turkeys instead?

Good point…next…how about turning off all of the incessant lights and use the money spent on extra electricity to support the poor and otherwise needy?

People tend to need deadlines to get things done. The holidays give us not just deadlines but reminders to do the right thing plus a mindset towards thinking of others that can be directed towards the greater good. It’s not perfect, but it sure beats doing nothing all year round.

There is a movement going on now called “26 Acts” in remembrance of the CT school shooting. I have no problem with that, but maybe we could continue after that and do good deeds “just because”. Take that buy-one-get-one coupon and give the free sandwich away. Keep some bottled water in the car and hand it to the guy holding a cardboard sign at the intersection. Return that wayward cart, even if it’s not yours, to the store. It doesn’t have to be lot, or cost a lot, but think what everyone doing one small thing everyday could do.

Reminds me of the song “Rebel Jesus”:“We guard our world with locks and gunsAnd we guard our fine possessionsAnd once a year when christmas comesWe give to our relationsAnd perhaps we give a little to the poorIf the generosity should seize usBut if any one of us should interfereIn the business of why they are poorThey get the same as the rebel Jesus.”

I’ve volunteered at a drop-in shelter, and the shelves were just about overflowing. But come April, there’s almost nothing.
