Frazz by Jef Mallett for January 12, 2013
Transcript:
Caulfield: I got a book on CD from the library, and right at the good part it started doing this thing. Frazz: What do people do? Throw them like frisbees? Caulfield: Sometimes they just drop them. Frazz: You know anything you say can be used against you... Caulfield: If I did drop a disc it was a Faulkner. That's barely one sentence.

I’ve never had a CD skip. Come to a halt and refuse to play, yes, but skipping no.

I never had a printed book skip, but I have had books with pages torn, dog eared, and spotted on. Other books had wrinkled pages from exposure to water, and mold growing on them (in a flood). And finally, some had pages turning yellow from sun overexposure. We get what we pay for.

@Varnes and a A LOT of hassle. I have about had it with Audible.com that sells you files that can only be open in iTunes. After the newest upgrade, you cannot simply add a new book to the ipod, you need to ’synchronize everything, and it is ridiculous.
@gmforde – can’t read them paper books on long drives. That whole “keep your eyes on the road” thing.

Digital music does not have to be lower quality, necessarily, than CDs. The mp3 format does lose some quality in exchange for smaller file size, but there are lossless compression formats as well, or noncompressed formats. Same quality as a CD, but you fit less songs on your ipod.

I’ve seen printed books skip. Admittedly, it requires printer error (or editor or author error), rather than abuse of an originally-good copy.

Years ago, Sidney Harris did a laugh-out-loud cartoon of “Hemingway’s Dog Meets Faulkner’s Dog.”Hemingway’s dog: Arf and arf. A nice woof. Some bows and some wows. Bow wow. A clean woof.Faulkner’s dog: Woofed woofingly (yet arfing arfarfarf woofs bowwowing) wooves, wowwing too, woofation, arfs, not only bow (wow) but bowing wow wooving.: ) One of my favorites of all time.

Is a digital book burning done with magnets?

CDs can skip, but only if you’re in your car and hit a rough patch on the road. I had one that I thought was damaged, skipped in the same spot every day (I tend to listen to the same one several days in a row-not inmy car that long). Then, I was outon a different road and it didn’t skip. Suddenly realized I was on the exact same portion of highway everytime that exact section skipped.

I like my digital books. I have the same books on four different devices including my main PC where I can read them and store them for backup. I’ve had way too many books eaten by one of my dogs. Pages missing. Pages stuck together. They’re a complete and utter mess. And they take up LOTS of room. I still have one room with nothing but books in them. And now, I can store every single one of those, and more!!, on one small, 8 oz device. That’s lighter than the paperback books I read. I lose the device? Yes, I’m out the money for the device, but I still have every single one of those books at my disposal. My computer crashes? Backed up on 3 other devices. Again, no loss. I even have books from older no longer function devices, that I’ve updated for my new ones. Seriously, you bunch sound like 8 track tape fanatics. Get over it.

I got a book once that skipped about 20 pages, they were missing (It was printed that way, not badly handled, but I’ve had mishandled missing pages in library books too) I’ve gotten several where there was a crease in the page and the words were printed over it and thus, broken up, would that count as a skip?.and puddle you CAN retrive it, there are several good programs out there that will do it if you don’t want to take it to a pro. I regurly use one to retieve pictures my 5 year old accidently deleats on her camera.

CDs can take a lot as compared to records. For one thing, the data is on the lable side with the plastic thus protecting it. For another CD players tend to use software to fill in the missing parts reasonably. .To clean a dirty CD: take diswashing liquid, and clean in rays out from the center (going around the circle of the disk can cause scraches in the direction of data, and THAT’S what causes skips) if the mess is adhesive, use rubbing alchohol, avoid corrosives like finger nail polish remover or WD40. To smooth out old scraches, use baking soda and water to make a paste, and very gently polish with your finger (not a toothbrush or towel) in small circular motions, lacking that you can use a VERY small amount of toothpaste.

I read the first three chapters of “The Sound and the Fury”. I had no idea what was happening until I picked up a Cliff Notes version.
