Miss Phelps: Welcome ladies! know where you're headed?
Bernice: I'm going to Mooney University first.
Delta: Intern alley, then I'll hit my top 3 schools.
Luann: I'm definitely going clockwise...
or maybe alphabetical..
Poor Luann, her best friends are career minded and have their future planned out and she doesn’t have a clue. She’s more representative of most kids out there including my own.
And before you scold me for not providing more guidance I encourage you to hang out with 16 and 17 year olds for a while. They are so full of angst, bravado, and excitement that it’s hard to get them headed on a good path.
Luann you got to make choices. Do you think you can just drift along from high school to college, fall into some course of study, graduate, take a job, and then switch serendipitously into a 32 year rewarding career like I did? Times have changed!
Just heard on the news that new nurses out of school are having difficulty finding jobs. Nursing used to be one of the guaranteed job fields, but not now.
dzsquared: can you explain your stove comment to me? I don’t understand it. Besides, they don’t have ovens in their pockets, they have cell phones. Wake up. It’s 2013, not 1990
Regarding Luann’s cluelessness about college, this is nothing new. As recently as last summer, she was talking about going to Julliard (I think) to become an actress or comedienne or whatever just because her friends said she’s funny. Luann’s world begins at the top of her head and ends at the tips of her toes…like most teenagers.
I thought Luann had this covered already. She wants Music and acting. She discussed a Jr. college with a Drama dept. Maybe someone from one of these schools will say: “Wait, Are you the Luann who did “HEY BOY” on Youtube?" ☺
“Luann does not have a clue. This is not a good indication for the college experience ahead of her.”``Not necessarily. My 17 yr old is not sure which college either. She does not have to conform to the world of the over achievers to be a happy and successful person.
I’d like to go to Brigham Young University (the Utah campus, not the Hawaii or Idaho campuses). Plan B is the University of Washington. If that fails, I might as well go to their rivals the University of Utah and Washington State University.
Focus, girl, focus. You have a plan too— first check out the Community College acting program. If it’s just a two-year program, ask that rep to recommend a 4-year program to transfer to.*All three of you have forgotten to dress for success, have planned questions to ask the reps, bring notebooks and pens to write the information they give you.
As I watch my nieces and nephews, new grads with very specific training, struggle in the work place, I wonder about the push to require kids to commit to a specific future while techology keeps changing. Sometimes, its better to be a little more of a generalist – or, at least, not so specialized that you can’t adapt.
Bernice has stated she wanted to become a veterinarian, not an academic. However, she might very well stay in academia once she gets the taste of it in college. Probably easier than getting into vet school! Delta—she hasn’t changed her plan for years. She’s working it now. Luann—she’s thought about music and acting, and she might spend some time recording music long distance with Quill, even get some air time on local radio (or become a hit in Australia, thereby justifying a trip there). But acting? I read a book on acting once which started out brutally enough, something along the lines of this: Acting is one of the hardest occupations in the world to make a living at. If there is anything else in your life that you could bear to do other than acting, do that. Wow. I don’t think times have changed, and I don’t think Lu has what it takes to be that working actor. Besides, there’s Quill in Australia, and that’s going to cause a lot of problems with “where do I go next” until they either move closer together or break up.
Besides, Bernice and Delta are the smart, exceptional kids who are burning to advance and actually have plans. Most kids (unless times have changed, and I doubt that) don’t know what they want to do when they’re 17-18. College is a way to prolong adolescence for most of them these days, and even those who get marketable degrees are having trouble finding work (as others have advised). I’d say go for medicine or the allied health professions, since there’s no way they can outsource all of medicine. BUT! Medicine, nursing, and allied health professions are NOT for everyone.
*
Someone mentioned nurses are having trouble finding work—I’m a nurse, and I recall that the field seems to go in cycles: there’s a glut, there’s a shortage, there’s a glut, there’s a shortage…etc. Tough graduating when there’s a glut, but that should change soon enough. Nurses retire, burn out, shift around in the field, and so on. We’ll never not need nurses!
Well, if you’re looking for a MRS degree, that’s true! (I met my hubby at the neighborhood U of MN bus stop!)-I started at the U of MN without knowing what degree I wanted – changed mind twice – it doesn’t all have to be decided freshman year.
Interesting that Delta and Bernice have been college/career-focused for decades, and NONE of it seems to have made an impression on Luann. You’d think they’d have talked about it enough.
Been a long time since i;ve been here( computer issues, life etc) but just5 a few thoughts.
1. I thought Mooney University was some sort of comedic pun, like whatsamatta U.
2. I too thought Nursing was guaranteed or semi guaranteed job. Not so? Then why all the hoopla in the last 10-15 years about Nursing shortages?
3. Seems like only the medical profession or fast food and janitorial jobs are the only options that can’t be outsourced… But Not So. Think of Web MD, computerized glucose meters, the food a racacyle vendor and Rosie the robot from The Jetsons…. except maybe those of cartoonists responding to those tho post comments. Does anyone remember the song In the year 2525?
Bernice and Delta go to college, get their degrees summa cum laude…and then can’t find a job in their field, and end up working at Macy’s or Taco Time.
Luann doesn’t go to college, or drops out, works at Macy’s or Taco Time sooner, and is a manager by the time Bernice and Delta get there. In addition, she has significantly less student loans to pay off.
I feel for Luann. Who do you think will get shot down first when reality strikes? At least L. has the sense to be confused. It’s amazing how empowering it is to admit that you don’t know.
I think a good plan for most kids at 18 is to get a general education at a community college and work up to 20 hours a week. A good worker can often get ahead once they have their foot in the door. And they get ideas from their peers in the workplace. Probably best for Luann. If she goes for a drama major it’s not likely to lead to a way to make a living – except maybe in sales.
“Most never give up looking for work but the govt says you have in 6 months regardless.”
*
Of course, Night-Gaunt—that’s what makes the government stats so ridiculous. The unemployment figures are much higher than are published in the mainstream press. It’s around 25% per John Williams. Wasn’t unemployment around 25% in the Great Depression? Uh-oh…
I read through some of Greg’s blog (referenced above by Brdshtt) and he said last year that the kids are 16. Gad! That makes them sophomores! I wasn’t thinking overmuch about college in 10th grade, myself. Yet, elsewhere, in a couple places, we are given to believe this is their last year of high school. Now I’m confused.

With Obamacare, Health and Medical fields are best – but don’t do a Medicare one, though.
