Ralph: Wanna go for a ride in the car, Wally?
Wally: Car? Yes! (x4)
Ralph: OK, let's go! We might have to make a little stop at the vet.
Wally: Wait, what??
Bob: I've never seen a cat laugh!
Getting one of my cats in the carrier is an exercise in total frustration. Once I actually had to drop a towel on the cat, wrap it up fast and shove it into the carrier.
The trick is to take them for rides all the time, then when its vet time they have no idea.I take my dogs for a ride just around the “block”, it makes them so happy.
Our cat is unhappy but stoic about vet visits. The dog, on the other hand, can’t wait to get there and then doesn’t want to leave. He just loves attention.
My cockatoo used to actually laugh at jokes about cats. She understood English so well that she would get quiet and sullen if anyone remarked that a bird should not be in some place where I had taken her, and LOVED attention so much that if there were new people and no one remarked about her she might raise her voice and say “the BIRD!”, otherwise she just greeted with whatever form of “Hello, How are you?” and she often told an attractive young man “I love you”. I really miss that darling (her body is sitting on a perch above my desk).
We had miniature dachshund who would nuts like Wally if we asked if she wanted to go for a ride. If the trip was to the vet everything went well …until we got to the vet. I always had to carry her in.
My dogs love car rides. If I just need to move my car from the driveway to the curb, they get in. We drive down the street and back. They love it! I agree. The key is lots of random rides. It also helps that ours love going to the groomer’s and the petsitter’s.
