Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for January 10, 2013
Transcript:
Dad: Even though the hispanic population of this state is 35 percent, only 10 percent of the state legislature is hispanic. Gracie: Do you know what this means? Dad: It means hispanics are under-represented in state politics? Gracie: No! Gracie: I may have to run for office a lot sooner than I planned!

Or that most of what has to be legislated is non racial?

If we are all supposed to be equal, why would the racial percentage of representatives matter as long as the best people for the job are in there?
farren almost 12 years ago
It might not, but if you define “best people for the job” as those who aren’t minorities, you’re up a rather big and smelly creek.

If Hispanics aren’t running, whose fault is that? If they are but aren’t getting elected, again, whose fault is that? Dont’t vote for the race, vote for the person.

Or if you wish, vote for race, it should be a free country. But if you vote race, you are the one who may be called racist, aren’t you?
BTW, I am not american, so all of it is just my own humble opinion.

Hector D. Cantu and Carlos Castellanos should relax and stop worrying about the invented concept of race and just enjoy being human
ncalifgirl58 almost 12 years ago
The Hispanic population is going to be way more than 35% soon. Already is in some places.

Could it be that 25 percent of the population is here illegally and can’t vote or perhaps don’t vote?

There aren’t enough Presbyterians in my state legislature and I’m pretty ticked off about it, let me tell you!!!!

Most people in this country consider themselves to be Americans, not English, French, German, or whatever. They came to this country to be Americans, not something else. I know a lot of wonderful people who came from Mexico and other Latin American countries, but the people from Mexico who identify themselves as Mexicans instead of Americans and tell others that they have a right to live in America because they are from Mexico are offensive to Americans. If you came here legally to be Americans, welcome. If you won’t assimilate like the rest of us, please leave.

93% of African-Americans voted for obama. Is that not racism?

phritzg: It wasn’t Gerry’s idea; the lege presented it to him with enough votes to override. .1after909: How do you know they don’t. The corporate media won’t mention any candidate the multinational corporations don’t like – particularly Greens.

Am I missing something? Is there a law, or a provision in the Constitution that requires representation by ethnic group? Perhaps the authors of the strip should take a basic class in civics.
hippogriff almost 12 years ago
Thomas Hart: Custom, not Constitution. Only rich white males need apply. Not too efficient in recent days, as they have let in a few Uncle Toms and Tio Tacos.
