Kim: Wonder if I should've let Mike go shopping on his own... he's bound to pick out dorkwear. So how'd the annual shop go? Mike: Not good. Did you know that the style for men now is one size too small? Tight little suits that show your wrists and ankles! Who wants to look like their clothes have shrunk! Kim: People half your age, Mike. That look isn't meant for you. Mike: But why not? Why do they only cater to skinny hipsters? How come the rest of us don't get to look stylish? Kim: Beats me. What what'd you get? Mike: Underwear. It was on sale at the gas station.

What’s wrong with classic, well fitted style? No plumbers butt for me. And I want shirt tails long enough to stay tucked when there is some strenous activity(such as getting out of a couch).

I was never in fashion when I was young enough for them to be making clothes for me. Now my style is “aging engineer”.

What is wrong with aging engineer? Works for me!

Mike Doonesbury, member of the 1%, buys dork undies on sale at the gas station!

How come Mike’s glasses have a temples part in panels 4 and 6, but no temples part in panels 3, 5, 7 & 8?
DylanThomas3.14159 almost 12 years ago
In panel 3 you can see Kim’s just-as-skinny pointed wisps of hair from the same distance. Not to mention the shopping bag handles. As well as the even skinnier wisp of Mike’s hair sticking down in front of his forehead.

One good thing about being an ol’ geezer is that the Fashion Police stop hassling you.

When they offer stylish clothes for people your age, you still buy gas station underwear.

I have spent decades not being “stylish”, positively just being me. Earnestly being ‘fashionable’ is tiresome, although watching others desperately clawing their way up the greasy pole of being ‘hip’ can be most amusing. Set a trend, be untrendy. Builders/plumbers bum may not be desirable, but it is an illustration of a world shortage of cotton.

I have a 92 year old friend who still wears shirtwaist dresses she bought in the fifties and sixties. She looks very elegant, and much more fashionable than anyone I know.

My lady friend, was saying that the other day with her friends. There is nothing out there for woman past 50, and Penney’s is the worst offender. She always used to shop there, but now, nothing but stuff for the kids.

Never saw any underwear on sale at any filling station in Texas.>>Most truck stops have underwear. Plus, most of the chain stops have tshirts, coats, shirts, and pants. All geared for the trucker. Dorky? Probably. Oh, and this includes Texas.

Twenty years ago, I was trying to cheer the kid in the next apartment up. Told him I got hassled in school too, but just live through it, and you grow up and nobody cares if you wear white socks and highwater pants every day. I hope he’s doing okay. He helped me past some rough spots in Super Mario Brothers.

Clothes certainly help but a lot of looking good involves how you feel about yourself, how you carry yourself.

I love the first panel, you can imagine that Kim has no clothes on.

I thought at first, that because of the inevitable expansion due to age, Mike was complaining that he couldn’t buy clothes in sizes he used to. Many of us can relate to that – the ever-expanding waist , for example.Nowadays, I wear clothes for comfort not for fashion. And, like most guys, I hate to throw out anything that still fits ( or might, if I held my breath ), so I’ve got shirts, jeans, jackets, tee shirts, warm-ups, cowboy boots, hats etc. that are older than many of the readers. Some stuff has actually come back in style !

Also, I don’t know if it would help if Kim buys stuff for him. When I buy stuff for my husband, it always gets either stuffed away in the closet or returned.

I didn’t know that you could even get underwear at the gas station. Guess I’m really out of touch.

I realize It’s been at least a decade, but could Kim please have a storyline to herself again? Please? She used to be smart and hot – for years now she’s just been Mike’s dialogue partner.Heck – I’d even settle for something nostalgic like parroting words from TV ads (God, I’m showing my age).I’ve long wondered if we’d ever have a storyline that reveals BD to be her long-lost biological father.

“Men’s style” is an oxymoron.

@ Masterskrain:
I don’t think it would’ve been Phred. His venerable Mom wouldn’t have let him “love’em and leave’em”
Anything would be an improvement, though. Let’s face it, even everybody’s favorite president-for-life/bartender/Duke’s houseguest has more depth and development than Kim has in years.

“The Amish stay mostly in the 19th century.”
That’s true. It’s part of their charm. Most people don’t consider them “unhip”. What would the point be? They have their own community, and they’re simply not wannabes in any sense whatsoever.

Give me the classic twill pants (often called “Dockers”) and a polo shirt (no popped collar) and good shoes for casual, classic single or double breast suit with a wide brimmed hat and wing-tips for not casual. It’s worked for 80 years, no reason for it to stop now.

Where was the conservative outrage during the 7 embassy attacks with 31 deaths during the administration of Bush Jr?If you are just going to waste everyone’s time with off topic posts and whining, then at least use ALL the facts, rather than cherry-picking the ones that help you push your agenda against the sitting President.
