Is Sluggo undergoing character growth, leading to a fundamental change? D:

Seems to me more of an indictment of our current society’s entitlement mentality and such an indictment fits the tone of the strip. Why work when you can have someone else pay you enough to live as you’re content to live? Clearly enough people believe that to have re-elected Santa Claus for president (along with his loyal congressional elves). The other option was to “work and be rewarded” and they chose “just reward me” instead. So, more people hop on the cart and eventually the mules will simply stop pulling, regardless of how much they’re whipped. History repeats.

I agree with Nancy, “Work and be rewarded? What a concept!” Fit’s in with today’s “Pearls before Swine” about where EVERYONE gets a trophy.

Work isn’t work when it’s its own reward.

Wait, Phil didn’t “give” Sluggo anything; Sluggo earned it.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Both parties would pull any kind of trick to get their cantidate elected. We need to replace them with two new parties. Or find another planet, that would be eaiser.

I’m liberal and proud of it. Years ago, I gave up trying to have a sensible conversation with right-wingers in 21st Century America. I can get a more intelligent discussion from a bag of hammers.

@WaitingManSo you think the government should support everyone? I’ll go along with that, but who will pay for it?

What a concept indeed!

So Sluggo took a stylish coat from someone poor who could have used it to better his life

The entitlement mentality is a minor issue. I believe the major problem is that special interests have too much influence on Congress. It’s time for a new Teddy Roosevelt to come to Washington carrying a big stick to break up the monopolies. But now let me step off the soapbox and say bravo to Sluggo, Phil and Guy for showing us some good old work and reward.

I think that work:reward is a good point for adults! I know this is aimed at making a point to adults, but Nancy and Sluggo are supposed to be, what? 8, 7? No. It should have been illustrated using adults.
Kids that little should be going to school, playing and learning chore/work skills at the knees of their parents or someone. Not trying to survive in a leaky house with threadbare clothes and mooching food fom his friend. I know this is just a cartoon strip, and I’m supposed to see Sluggo more as an adult who chooses this type of life.
I do like the way this story seems to be going! A stable, respectable male figure in the lives of these kids, a partner for Ritzy. Yeah!!

I like the new look of Sluggo sans patches

I see that this became a political statement to some folks. OK. It is whatever you deem it to be. To me, it is just about a kid who put in a little time doing chores and was rewarded. Has anyone ever had the experience of never being asked, never being required, never being cared about in a way you noticed……….and all of a sudden, being valued. I did….as a young, poor boy. I’ve been writing SLUGGO for almost 18 yrs. I get it. If you want to know about me….try google. BUT…..The strip’s not about me.It’s about laughs, love and life. But as for me…..when someone recognized me as a person…..when I was just a fatherless kid…..That chip on my shoulder melted…….and I started to figure things out. God bless the kids who grew up with nothing and found everything. Smile. That’s what this story has always been about. I’m political….but my strip will never be…….. Smile The world is a tough, cold and cruel place….and the NANCY comic is a brief escape from all that….That is my job….and my blessing.. As The Beatles said….All you need is Love….bump ba da da dah……………………………….
