Krazy and Felix were icons of their day (I have collections of the former and even some silent animated cartoons of the latter), but my heart belongs to Hobbes and Bill the Cat (of whom I have a wonderfully hideous stuffed version).
When I was in grade school, (eons ago !) we used to have a plastic, black ’n white cat clock mounted above the kitchen door. Its eyes moved back ’n forth along with the tail too ! Looked just like Felix !!!

Hold the phone. Wikipedia says “Ziggy” came out in 1968. “Garfield” was 10 years later.

I enjoy both Felix and Garfield, but THE greatest cartoon feline of all time is Krazy Kat!

The best new cat is Grumpy cat. She is adorable and I think she will probably have her own comic strip at some point.

I love the comic hybrids. I’ve always been a big “Garfield” fan, too.
