Let your TiVo work it out. Or if you have to schedule programs yourself, local networks often do not repeat, so they take priority. I never heard of Smash and it may be network. Lifetime (PR) has plenty of repeats at odd hours and History Channel does not have the budget for many new shows so those can always be caught later on (just be sure you know episode #). I never worry about it – LOVE TiVo!!
My lover does all the documentarys of any importance (I prefer the salacious ones) and I seldom save any to DVD (I have hundreds of DVDs saved (every season of Top Chef, Project Runway etc). I only have to worry about scheduling when I go away from my home for many weeks at a time, as I don’t want to overload the hard drive. I watch many throwaway shows (like the housewives, TMZ and Andy Cohen). Those are skipped on vacation unless I watch them on treadmill at his house, but has to be live (he has no DVR) and I have seen the same “How’s it Made” twice in an evening as TV is more of a night light ;-D

The Egret’s Regret.
I have a hard enough time finding a single show I want to see, much less recording 5 at the same time.

The Waltons. I found that documentary very interesting about a family living on Walton Mountain.

The History Channel show will probably be on three hours later; record it then.
