Mother’s Day is hard when you don’t have a good mother. I will also be glad when it’s over. But I do hope all the mother’s have a great day. I will take whatever pampering I can get. lol

It can be hard if you don’t have kids. But it’s only one day out of a year and the moms deserve it.

In real life, Cathy had two sisters. Maybe she dreamed of being the pampered, only child of the family.

What are you griping about? Mothers deserve one day a year (they deserve more in my opinion) in their honor. They have the hardest and, at times most thankless, job in the world. That’s when a good responsible dad is in the picture, as he becomes her oldest child. It’s 1,000,000 times harder when he isn’t. I don’t know if you have children to honor you tomorrow, but even if you don’t I know you have a mother. If she is still with us, call her or pay her a visit. If she has passed on, my condolences, but you can still visit her grave and tell her that the love you have for still lives on, the things she taught you will never be forgotten, and that she lives on through you.Mother’s Day is not about spending money on Mom. it’s about spending time with her and showing her how much you love her and appreciate everything she does and has done for you.

A “Framed Collectible Print” of this strip would make a great gift.

Cathy’s Mom will just have to settle for Electra. (My own Mom was very happy to have grandcats, and since she didn’t yet have grandkids, we put the little grandcat pillow in the coffin when she died.)

I disagree with what Cathy is doing in this comic (a grandchild is not a substitute for a proper thank-you to your parents for raising you), so I don’t have much else to say on that.Regarding Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, they were not invented by greeting card companies, so you need to do your research on that, Susan. From previous posts, it seems that you didn’t have an ideal childhood and you dislike your parents for various reasons. I didn’t have a wonderful childhood either, however I did have children and I now realize what a difficult job being a parent is so I am able to forgive my mother for what happened years ago. I also realize that everyone is a product of how they were raised, so if my parents did things that were not right, it was most likely because of how they were raised and they didn’t know any better. While I am far from an ideal parent, I have tried to be better than my parents in order to try and break the cycle. We’ll see how I have succeeded or failed as my children grow up. Either way, I do strongly feel that I should honor my mother, which I do all the time although she still hurts my feelings from time to time. She is the reason I am here, she is the reason that I am who I am, and I try to focus on the positive attributes that I got from her. I try hard not to be negative, especially on Cathy, but I take offense today, Susan, because you are deliberately choosing to take your personal experience with your mother and turning Mother’s Day into a negative experience for all of us. That’s fine if you want to express your opinion or if you don’t want to celebrate Mother’s Day, but I come to Cathy to get a pleasant experience, not to read about how you don’t think parents should be honored at all. I know you are Jewish, but I don’t recall you posting about how Christmas is a made-up holiday (although it sort of is because historians think that Jesus was born in the fall rather than December and I’m sure you disagree about Jesus being the son of God). So, if you feel the need to be rude on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, don’t be surprised to get a response.

Tomorrow my mother will be coming over to our house for my husband’s special grilled hamburgers along with a few other kinds of food that’s not good for us and our diet: potato chips, pasta salad, deviled eggs and, for dessert, cherry pie. Should be a pretty nice day . . . too bad it’s only going to be about 62° or 63° for the high though. Not too cool for grilling but we definitely won’t be sitting out on the deck to enjoy our dinner tomorrow like we were able to do last year.

    Hi, rgcviper!

lightenup: (From yesterday): While my mother IS just a little too trusting of strangers and everything they tell her sometimes, she otherwise does pretty well when it comes to paying all of her bills on time so it would be really difficult to justify — to her as well as ourselves — taking away the control of her finances at this time. My husband will continue watching over her accounts as he’s been doing since my dad died almost 11 years ago and I’ll continue to remind her of the newest scams going around when I hear about them (and hope she starts listening to me). But until I see some hard-core evidence that she can no longer care for herself financially under ANY circumstances (which would then force me at that point to take control of them myself), I’m just going to have to trust her to do the right things . . . and pray that she doesn’t lose it ALL to some scam artist in one fell swoop FIRST before I realize she needs help.

Hello and Happy Mother’s Day Weekend, fellow “Cathy” fans. Hope it’s been a really nice one for you all so far!!!!!

Hey, triviaguy and lightenup, back the F off. My mom was not so great when I was growing up, but I’m still able to love her. As legaleagle says, not everyone is so lucky. And everybody gets to have their opinion about this (yes, entirely made up) holiday. Nobody’s “ruining” Mother’s Day with their feelings about it, but your apparent insistence that Susan needs to get over herself sure is ruining this strip for me!
