Electra: The car! She's finally here! Lood sad! ...No. Look happy! ...No. Sulk and glower! ...No. Leap and slobber! ...No. Be coy! No. Mad! No. Ambivalent! Hah! Cathy: Hi, silly! Did I wake you up? Electra: Four hours to prepare, and I still wore the wrong look.

Only dear Cathy’s dog would be so complicated. Most dogs are just happy to see you..Hello Cathy friends! We have a holiday today so it seems like Saturday.

Now see, cats don’t do that. Their reaction upon your coming home is, “Oh, were you gone? Whatever. You’re back now? Good — now get into the kitchen and fix me something to eat!”

Nice one. Cathy’s dog is acting just like Cathy would in the same situation. That dog needs more exposure to less neurotic people.

I used to have a cat who would always be seated at the front door seven minutes before the OH arrived home. It didn’t matter whether he was in the car, or walking from the bus stop – the cat knew when he would get back!
That cat’s younger brother now goes to the door eleven minutes before the arrival. He usually sits up at the window, ready to greet OH with purrs and cuddles.
How they know the time I do not know. He doesn’t have a precise work timetable, so it’s not that. I swear they can hear the car arriving from several miles away!
But . . . that doesn’t explain the bus . . .

@legal I WISH my cats were like that! They both run to the door when they hear us coming up the steps, and they both demand a LOT of petting and attention. That is not what I signed up for!

Cats like cuddles. (Most cats, anyway.)

Well, a good illusionist, if nothing else.
