    Oscar was French. The last of the Vasas was approaching death without an heir, so the Riksdag, hoping to get on Napoleon’s good side, elected one of his Marshalls, Bernadotte, as heir; on the king’s death, Bernadotte was crowned as Carl XIV John. Opinion is divided as to whether Bernadotte was personally ambitious or thought Napoleon had betrayed the Revolution, but he involved Sweden in the coalition that defeated Napoleon at Leipzig.

    My great-great grandfather was reportedly a friend of Oscar’s, and his father of Bernadotte, to the point of moving from France to Sweden with him. Hence I consider myself 97% Swedish and 3% French.
