After the war Germany was a mess. Some of the Allied commanders helping to rebuild it thought the task was too great, impossible. This character would have been better off staying where he was…
By ‘43 there are 12-year-olds being stuffed into what was left of the uniforms. Young tweens in the conquest areas started wearing skirts so they wouldn’t be conscripted..No idea if Africa corps still had mean age in 20’s tho.
1964 -1929 would make him about 35. Still within same generation and definitely within living memory. Burr probably didn’t have to say this guy was a young teen in a tank..It’s very hard to tell what common knowledge was in another generation..
No one 1943 believed in concentration camps, either the German or the Japanese. The Andersonville was not in the same generation and almost out of living memory.
That’s the Tokyo internment of the Canadians, not the Am of Japn. I’ve only met one person who knew about the Tokyo camps, and he had carryed out 87 lb POWs to the Lexington because they could no longer walk.

1944 he is 20 most probably. maybe as old as 25……… so he would be in his 40s at that time???

The Afrika Korps surrendered in 1943 so Kurt was on the lam for 21 years. Could have gone home in 1946 with some BS story to fill in the three years?

Presumably he met the woman by then and was hopelessly in love, and has waited all this time for her to like him back.

I wonder if he is talking with a German accent? Or did he lose that in the desert too?

Casual goog seems to show 31 year old survivors in the stripped Panzer units trying to look out for teens in the field less than 6 months.
