I didn’t need naggingfor practice. I really enjoyed learning the trumpet. I think at first my folks were regretting it.

Guilt worked for me. They bought the stupid thing for me (instead of hiring it and seeing if I actually liked it or showed any talent – which I didn’t) they bought on credit and had to pay it off for months. Felt so guilty I could never tell them how much I hated it. Stayed in band for years as a result. enjoyed the music, just not the playing. Probably didn’t do my any real harm though! (except I hate half-time shows)

Phil is letting him off easy. When I was learning to play the trumpet(cornet) my teacher said to practice a minimum of an hour a day(wknds included not including my hour lesson on Saturday). My Mother enforced it on days when my Father wasn’t home(he was a traveling salesman).

Nope. My now adult son’s early trumpet teacher had a saying which was far more wise – “Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent.”

I used to hate to practice the piano for 30 minutes a day, so I would sit there and waste time until it was done. Now I tell my kids to play each song 3 times without mistakes and they’re done (5 times if they need it). Seems to encourage them to try harder.

If Elly was so annoyed at Phil for giving Michael a trumpet, why is she going to nag Michael to practice?

I agree. There are many attractive housewives and mothers. Don’t quite understand why the need to draw the character so very dowdy with sagging breasts. What’s that about??

I did eight years of band because I enjoyed it, but I can’t say I had a talent for it. If I heard a note I was never able to identify it. Without being able to read sheet music I’d have been useless. I’d never have been able to play by ear. When I practiced hard I was mediocre, and I didn’t usually practice that hard.
