Timbuktu (English pronunciation: pron.: /ˌtɪmbʌkˈtuː/; French: Tombouctou pronounced: [tɔ̃bukˈtu]; Koyra Chiini: Tumbutu), formerly also spelled Timbuctoo and Timbuktoo, is a town in the West African nation of Mali situated 20 km (12 mi) north of the River Niger on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. The town is the capital of the Timbuktu Region, one of the eight administrative regions of Mali. It had a population of 54,453 in the 2009 census.
There is another town I always thought fictional as it was mentioned in the Bugs Bunny cartoons (I must of missed that turn at .. ) but I can’t remember the name. Found it is real in Calif
Right now Timbuktoo is in the middle of a war with Islamists, but in the Middle Ages the doctors there were performing eye surgery when Europeans didn’t know what bacteria were.t
3 places Not to miss if you’re going to Kalamazoo: The Air Zoo at the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport; The Gilmore Car Museum at Hickory Corners just 15 miles NE of Kalamazoo, and the Binder Park Zoo which is the most enjoyable zoo in my experience.
The Wolf In Your Midst: Parts. but the loss of any part is tragic. It was the capital of the Songhai empire, one of the great ones of history, but censored by the Texas school board racists I ran against..I encountered a story of a letter written to a friend in Alexandria after the fall of Songhai to Moroccans. Somehow even with the collapse of empires, the mail gets through! It said (paraphrased): We all got out safely, but lost everything. Most of all was my library. It was small, only 10,000 volumes, but I do miss it. The letter still exists in a museum. If anyone knows which museum, I would appreciate being informed.
Hard to believe the Arabs hid and protected all that had been learned of the sciences, astronomy, mathematics and writings from the Crusaders. Now those little brown-thumbed rag-heads want to drag us ALL back into the 7th Century.
I have a Kalamazoo amplifier and an old Airline guitar. Used them at my first few gigs. The Kalamazoo amp was by Gibson. Just to give an idea of how old it is, It’s turned on by turning the treble control. And it doesn’t have a “volume” control, it’ says “loudness”.Gibson also made Kalamazoo guitars, and I wish I had one. Just to have the set.
Don’t know about kazoos, but Timbuktu has been the site of a world-famous music festival for some years. Don’t know whether the current conflict will cancel the next one.
Timbuktu..(laughing at the word)..Dad used to tellmy brother if he didn’t behave he would send him offto Timbuktu…Comedian Richard Pryor had a routine where he talked about growing up in Mississippi. Richard said“Some guy asked me where I was from..I said Tupelo.”“Guy said where the hells that?.I said right next to Onepelo.”
When I was young, my family would go on road trips through Washington State. As we drove through the town of Kalama, I would always wonder if they had a zoological garden!
UncaJim: First off, they didn’t hide much of anything. It took awhile to soak in dense European heads, but the crusades effectively produced the Renaissance. Most of the classical Greek writers and philosophers were lost to western Europe and Arabic copies (including some in the original Greek) were the way north-western Europe rediscovered their south-eastern heritage. Same with medicine, although a lot of it came through the Moors (including Jews) in Spain, until 1492 when Muslims and Jews (and their intellect) were thrown out of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabela..Second, Songhai was at its peak in the 1600s, well after the crusades. They had diplomatic relations with Spain, Portugal, and the major Italian states – hardly remote. Third, you are a bigot who can’t realize entire other cultures are smarter than you.
