Matches as wedding favors? I guess it takes all kinds. Anyway, Marg is right, Joy and Burl will have a suitcaseful in her purse and his pockets. If there is a champagne toast they’ll try for a set of flutes as well, although with Ted & Sue it might be V8 in plastic cups.
Ok the sign says “Lessman wedding,”so presumably Ted is Ted Lessman…. (This one is probably set in the 90’s…. today it would probably say something like “Lessman/Jones wedding.”)
But Burl is holding up a matchbook that says G&N.
The wedding couple’s initials are L for Lessman with Sue’s maiden initial… and all the other matchbooks say Sue and Ted.
Then you see that the guestbook is rudely signed G&N in huge letters… (I’m surprised it’s not B&J)
Perhaps the “tradition” Joy is referring to is that of buying second-hand/close out items and using them as gifts. Especially likely if the newlyweds are related to The Pennys!
Joys purse isn’t big enough for a lot of matches. Where are they hiding the book pack? It looks like a tacky place to have a wedding anyway, so they may be related to the Pennys’ .Or are they crashers? That would be my guess
Loveslife is probably right. They most likely are crashers. (Next the White House?) But perhaps they were invited. But even Bridezilla and her mother wouldn’t have ivited them even if they were from money. So maybe this is one of those corporate merger marriages. And all the employees of the subsidiaries are invited. (Takes the place of the Christmas party.)Naaah. I’m with Loveslife on this one.
Susan… I am not sure, but perhaps I had been taking too high a dosage of BB. But, I sort of really enjoyed it too. It gave all that the Pennys would do a sort of “beautiful” and “ethereal” quality. That said, the idea of seeing the Pennys in that light scared me into trying to go at it alone. I still get a bit shaky in my resolve though, so I would be worried I would fall of the wagon if I had such easy access to even just the chews. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I must admit, the idea of a nice, fruit-flavored BB chew is awfully appealing, though. I am flummoxed on how to proceed.
I remember the days when every restaurant (even very nice ones) gave printed matches and they were also one of the favors at parties. For a while (before I did the dressmaking) during my marriage, I did calligraphy for weddings as well as Bar and Bat Mitsvahs. Depending on the amount they wanted to spend, they had me do additional items, including matchbooks (some of which had fibers embedded in the material, catching on my pens if I was not careful). Many folks at both my children’s schools were familiar with my lettering because I used to be editor of the PTA newsletters at both their grade and HSs, hand doing many headings and illustrations. At least someone else ran the mimeo wheel and put them together.
By the way, anyone interested in my murals can see a whole narrative towards the end of the Saturday Ballard Street (up to current house (which has many wall “treatments” but no murals.
So…. the groom’s mother insisted they invite the Pennys. Why?Cos she wants to sock it to the bride’s parents, whom she doesn’t like… and they’re the one’s paying.
Mother and bride thought with a few dozen G&N matchbooks piled on top TWO dozen “Sue &Ted” ones underneath would suffice for their actual friends….
But they underestimated the Pennys’ greed…. as would anybody who’s never seen them in action! Burl and Joy reached that layer in a split second. They don’t even smoke…. but they like shiny things.
Pipe Tobacco…. maybe if you just bought one package at a time of the fruit chews from a local vendor, such as Crust Foods or Billy-Bob’s Liquor and Cheese, you’d have a small dose available if you really need it, but the higher cost would slow down your consumption?
As we have our offices in Crustwood, I like to offer our customers the benefit of speedy delivery and wholesale pricing…but I don’t mean to discourage purchasing your supply from any of our fine local retailers…
Sometimes the convenience, and the fact that you needn’t commit to the use of any certain amount, makes retail purchase the better alternative.

Are those bugs on Joy’s dress? They look like dead bugs on their backs with legs in the air.
