@ theological disputeSuch moments remind me that Mr. Watterson drew his comics in the pre-internet era. Any overzealous reader would have to discuss with paper Calvin (or Hobbes) or attempt to find a living person with different view and eager for a debate. Which might end up with a coffee and donuts, which might lead to friendship or even marriage. And what do we get from anonymous slogan-fighting? Coffee and donuts for everyone!

Well, without integers, I suppose when you die it would be very difficult to count the people in Heaven. But then, perhaps this only applies to those who are counting on Heaven.

Woody Allen did something similar to this strip in one of his movies. In one of the early scenes in his 1977 movie, Annie Hall. Little Woody Allen (called Alvy in the movie) is sitting in the doctor’s office with his mother. “What seems to be the problem?”, asks the doctor. “Well,” his mother says with evident frustration, “he’s depressed. It’s something he read.” “The universe is expanding,” Alvy explains morosely. “The universe is everything, and if it’s expanding, someday it will break apart and that will be the end of everything.” “He’s even stopped doing his homework,” his mother continues, with a look of total disgust. “What’s the point?” Alvy counters. “What has the universe got to do with it?” his mother explodes. “You’re here in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is not expanding!”
At least Miss Wormwood isn’t a nun, they taught with a stick in one hand. They don’t make much sense about math, they taught us how to kneel down, pray, and accept our fate. Every hurt was a prayer, just offer it up to God. I am a Christian, but that kind of talk went out with serfdom.
@Tacopielvr: It’s interesting to watch the characters in Pearls Before Swine evolve. Pig became more compassionate over time. Rat became less so. It’s as though the strip has only so much compassion to go around.
