Paw-pa: “Well, there I was, in the middle of Lexington Road, trapped! Taxis and passenger cars to the left and right of me, and the biggest ol’ semi you ever did see barreling smack-dab down the middle lane. It was aimed right at me! So, I did what any good ol’ turtle would do…”

Hey, the semi didn’t do nearly as well as Paw Paw. Hitting a speed bump at 70 MPH could ruin your day.

I wonder if Paw Paw’s related to the turtle I had to dodge on the I-12 on-ramp one morning.

A few commuters and I stopped everyone on our Fairfax County, VA country road a few years ago to rescue a very large snapping turtle before he could be hit and mushed all over the road.

Just so that you know, these reptiles can take a finger off if you are not careful. We were lucky and this one survived as far as I know.

When I put out a flare, many people were angry at us that morning as we were slowing down traffic and they couldn’t get to their government or other jobs and cursed us quite loudly as they went by.

They were in such a hurry that they didn’t notice the bald eagle and the blue herons that were looking down on us as we tried to save a little wildlife from certain death.

These are the same *#@#‘s that wouldn’t slow down to the marked 25 MPH and ran over and killed two of my dogs right in my front yard and then ran into three trees over the 35 years that I have been privileged to live here.

Even a motorcycle hit a police car or vice versa in front of my humble abode years ago. I keep an extra mailbox nearby as it has been a casualty several times as well.

I should say that there is a 90 degree curve nearby and the hurry up and drunken people just missed me a time or two by driving through my yard while I was mowing the lawn.

It was only a year later we had so much rain that another lady snapping turtle laid eggs in my front yard. Too bad that none survived.

I love wildlife and have been quite lucky to see a bit of it here in the Old Dominion.
