Lucy: Geez... I thought you'd be happy your dad and Victoria are getting married... Danae: That's not it... Lucy: Oh... because it's not all about you... ? Danae: What's your point?
I’m guessing the wedding won’t start until June, giving that this comic will be doing other things (like those one-day political gags, “Obvious Man”, side stories, etc.)
The worst thing, in my opinion, that can happen in a comic feature (or any other form of writing for that matter) is to be predictable. Have fun guessing, but none of them here is even close.
And, no, Potrzebie, Lucy is a “real” horse, the non-existent breed of a Pygmy Clydesdale. Danae, Kate and their friends all interact with Lucy as well as Kate’s dog, Petey.
Many readers assume that Hobbes is either a product of Calvin’s imagination, or a stuffed animal that comes to life when Calvin is the only one around, or when nobody else but him is looking. However, Watterson rejects both of these interpretations, saying, “Hobbes is more about the subjective nature of reality than dolls coming to life”; thus, there is no concrete definition of Hobbes’ reality.[5] Watterson explained: “Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way.” Hobbes’ reality is in the eye of the beholder. The so-called ‘gimmick’ of Hobbes is the juxtaposition of Calvin and Hobbes’ reality and everyone else’s, with the two rarely agreeing.
I know that the kids can talk to the animals, but I have never seen the adults talking to the animals, so they must be subjective-nature animals.
Hey, This dialogue actually brings tears to my eyes for my daughter’s dog talked to me and I to her. She was the best friend I had at the time. She helped me through numerous heart attacks and bypass surgery. If I didn’t initiate a conversation, she did. The dog was super intelligent and knew when I was hurting.
I must admit that she had a better command of my language than I had of hers.
Since Wiley is reading this, pygmy clydesdales don’t exist, but my wife (who rode ponies and horses competitively as a teenager) tells me that some of Lucy’s “visions”…like seeing a shark and crocodile infested lagoon when it was in reality a puddle is VERY typical of horses.
Do you have a daughter/niece/other relative who is into horses, that you learned this? Becuse my wife swears you must.
Also, I have to say that when you introduced Petey, and all the awful things that happened to him after his beloved owner died and then the “shot” where he was headed into Whatchacallit, ME and I knew what was about to happen was incredibly moving.
If I guess that Danae will continue to believe that the world exists solely to serve her while everybody else rolls their eyes, does that count as predictable?
“…I know that the kids can talk to the animals, but I have never seen the adults talking to the animals…”
I’ve never seen the adults WITH the animals… or were those panels in the 1% I’ve not seen?
Wiley, keep up the good work!
Couple of points, if I may.
I want to say that the facial expressions on the characters this week have been genius, especially Danae.
I think I see a bit of backbone beginning to show in Joe in the final panel yesterday.
I’m pretty sure that Joe knows about Lucy and I know Petey shows up in the living room frequently.
I personally wonder if Eddie talks to Pauly when they are alone - and if Pauly talks back. :-)
It is definitely Wiley’s world, predictable it will never be, and I can’t believe sometimes that he is gracious enough to share it with us. THX Wiley.

Ah, but it will be all about her soon enough. It will be about her being foiled by Victoria. Dad will have back up now. And backbone.

wait one second! Do the grown-ups know that the kids talk to their animals? Or is this a calvin-hobbes type relationship?

Have you never witnessed an old lady with her cat? They have complete two-way conversations!

There may be no such breed as a “Pygmy Clydesdale” but there are real breeds of miniature horses.

Hey, I have conversations with my cat every day, but they’re in cat language, not English. Cats are much more succinct.
