have only been to maybe 3 or 4 yard/garage sales in my life but have had 3 of them in the last 3 years, last one in April. NEVER again will I do that……..didn’t make all that much money and was a HUGE hassle. Good luck Ellie.

Sounds like a good children’s book, “Junk Day on Juniper Street” by Lillian Moore. People decide to clean out their homes and hire a garbage truck to haul it away. Before they do that, soon they start seeing each other’s junk has purpose for them, save for a gigantic rocking chair that no one seems to have any purpose for. When the garbageman arrives, he is a big man who fits in the rocking chair and seems to like it himself, so he puts it in his truck “…and he drove off with all the junk on Juniper Street”.

In a multi-family yard sale, the host family could end up with more junk than they started with!

I love thrift shops, but they’re impersonal. At yard sales I feel obligated to buy something just to keep from insulting the seller!

In one neighborhood we lived in, the annual yard sale would coincide with the “World’s longest yard sale” the first week of August. Our sale covered about five blocks. People would start up before the “official” time of 8am to vulture around the block to see what kind of deals there were. We participated a couple of times and did manage to make some money, but never enough to be worth the trouble. We did however, get rid of a lot of junk. This yard sale so far promises to be one where Ellie ends up getting stuck with doing the work and keeping whatever junk is left over. lol

I will hit a yard sale occasionally, but just thinking about doing one gives me the hives.

Freecycle. People ask for stuff, and they come and get it. Offer stuff you want gone, people come and get it.

    Works for me.

http://my.freecycle.org for those who haven’t discovered it yet.
