It's raining cats and dogs! That's such a dumb expression-everyone knows cats and dogs don't fall from the sky. The stork brings them! Yeah, you'd think such a common expression would have some basis in reality.
This is why history is important. In olden days, people kept animals such as cats & dogs in the upper part of their thatch roof. When it would rain really hard the animals would fall down into the main part of the house. Hence, when it would rain hard and the animals fell into their area, it was raining cats & dogs.
