I had to teach my city squirrels to be afraid of me: stomp my feet and charge them, arms flailing. Suddenly they remember their role in life is to feed the hawks: run!
Oh, and if you want to protect something in your garden from them, snap one of those plastic clamshells that produce comes in over your apple on the tree or whatever.
