Dill: Guess what? I was in the Rocket to Mars at the Food Pyramid waiting for my mom. And I saw Miss Bliss walk out of the store carrying groceries! Then she got in a car with stickers all over it and drove away. Alice: Wow! Did she see you? Dill: No. It would have been awkward. Alice: Wow. Miss Bliss with groceries and a car! Dill: It was so weird. And another thing. No matter how long I sit in it, the Rocket to Mars never actually goes to Mars. Beni: You have to put money in it, Einstein.

Miss Biss and groceries! What ever is the world coming to?
lazygrazer about 15 years ago
But why PAY to go to Mars when you can see Miss Bliss’s groceries, car and stickers for FREE!!

Very cute!
And a heartwarming fantasy–no parent in their right mind would leave a small child unattended outside a grocery store.

What are heartwarming fantasy - you actually believe that doesn’t happen constantly?

And they actually think that by putting money in the machine that they’ll actually go to Mars. Priceless.

Ah, Dill gets called Einstein once again.

Who doesn’t like soccer balls??? And who doesn’t remember that awkward moment of seeing their teacher outside the classroom environment for the first time. What ya mean they have lives!!!!
Dill’s observations not only always make me smile… but today I believe I can actually hear his voice in a film voice over narrative the way Thompson lays out the panels as part of a storyboard…
I wish I could find a rocket to mars… I have change in my pocket…

Young children are always amazed to see their teachers away from the school, doing normal things such as buying groceries. It is hard for them to comprehend that teachers do not spend their life in the classroom. Dill is no different than other preschoolers.

When I was in 6th grade (1964!), the wonderful Mrs. Jones would occasionally invite students to join her for lunch on a weekend, her treat. Awkward and wonderful at the same time. Needless to say, Mrs. Jones was my all-time favorite teacher.

Yes, teachers aren’t people, they’re TEACHERS! All small children know that. (Also, there are no criminals or predators allowed in the small town in which the Otterloops live - it’s perfectly safe for the kids to wander around by themselves)

Wow, Dill not only got to see stickers – but they are vintage “hippy flower stickers” too…. why would he think Mars would be better than that?!!

Hippie flower stickers? Must be Timmy Fretwork’s car!
BenPanced about 15 years ago
It’s a VW Bug. Hippie flower stickers were standard equipment in the 70’s. Which means this is either set in the 70’s or Miss Bliss hasn’t been able to buy a new car in over 30 years.

This is just about the only thing in my life, comic strip or anything else, that makes me laugh out loud, and long.
