@howtheduck (from Tuesday: Here’s what Schulz said in the Foreword to The Last Straw, included in the book link from my prior comment (I posted it Tuesday late in the day, so I thought I’d repost it, because Lynn fans, who may not have seen it or the book, might be interested in his words):
Foreword The comic pages needed LynnJohnston. They needed someone withher distinctive approach. I have noticed lately that a lot of theso-called gags in some of our newerstrips are virtually interchangeable. NotLynn’s. Her ideas match her characters. She can draw, too. She can drawtelephones, dentists’ chairs, fat ladiesskinny ladies, dogs, trumpets, kids, anddresser drawers. She can also coinphrases like “leftunders” for “leftovers.”And she isn’t afraid of sadness, as whenLizzie became ill. The comic pages needed LynnJohnston — she arrived justin time. Charles M. Schulz Creator of PeanutsThis strip was originally published June 12, 1984, a day short of 29 years ago. You say leftunders didn’t originate with her, but to me coin a phrase (as Schulz claims) means originate. But no one said she originated leftunders (though I think there’s a good chance she did). I only refuted your unsubstantiated claim that she borrowed (i.e., stole) it from Schulz. Hopefully, that’s now been put to rest.
Unfortunately, people do have their own lives. But obviously Elly’s friend doesn’t know about Elizabeth’s illness. But Elly, if you want to keep her as a friend, listen to her.
There is simply not enough time for everything. Now that she’s working she has to prioritize her life and that may mean less chats with Annie. Her family has to come first.
While I sympathize with both, lives and people change. Hopefully both are understanding of each others’ feelings. I don’t think either are incorrect in their thoughts and actions, however life doesn’t always go how one person wants it sometimes. I don’t think that Elly should give up her desire to write or work, but she should not also neglect her friend. Hopefully, it’s possible to balance both with no hard feelings.
Elly should ask her friend to come join her at the library, maybe she would get a job too and the both of them can work together until they could not stand each other and both would ge fired. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH!!!!!!!!!
When you work at home, you have to set guidelines or you can’t make it. Whatever it might be you are doing at home (I was doing piecework), people never quite understand that you can’t just drop it to go and play, or, of course, if you are an artist or writer, well, a lot of people don’t perceive that as ‘work’, as Lynn says.
I’ve never been very close with any women friends, tho’ when we visit at an event, I love to chat. Since I worked in a “man’s” profession (engineering) I had a lot of casual friends who were men (thinking of it, my group in HS had only one other girl and 4 guys- we exchanged Sci-Fi books and played chess). I kept most of the library in our family basement.
Annie did finally get a job. After she caught her husband cheating and made the threat to leave him if he did it again. I guess she figured she needed a way to support herself if she had to follow through with the threat.

Thanks for the origin of something that, to me, means originate. If that’s a pun, I apologize.
