rj: I can't believe it's already summer! verne: Actually, gents...summer doesn't officially begin for 12 days.... verne: Ah, the "summer solstice"...the magical moment when the sun will be at its northernmost point and summer commences......the ancient druids marked the solstice by observing how sunlight hit the towering stones at stonehenge. verne: Observe the shadows cast by this scale model I've fashioned out of potato chips...the sun has not quite achieved the proper angle to herald the solstice. verne: Or as many think of it: the longest day of the year. RJ: the second longest day of the year. hammy: he actually talked my ears off. cool.

Verne should visit Alliance, Nebraska and see Car Henge. A replica of Stone Henge made out of old cars.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carhenge

after the summer soltice, the days will be getting shorter, and the nights longer, unless you live at the equator. or, the southern hemisphere.

It’s always summer (supplemented with the rainy season) here in the Philippines where the days and nights are more or less the same duration all year. I like it here…

I much prefer to live by the traditional calendar where the Summer Solstice is Mid-Summer’s Day. Makes more sense.

Surprising he didn’t use some of the counterfeit Twinkies to build Stonehenge.

I thought that was still just a theory for what Stonehenge was…

Not all countries mark the seasons by the solstices. Some southern hemisphere countries mark winter’s start as 1 Jun.I think this may be partly due to the Julian-Gregorian calendar shift.
