When I was a kid, I was an only child and for long trips, I could sit in the middle seat, wear the seat belt around my waist (no shoulder straps) and lie in the back. We all did it from time to time. I was actually lying there during a car crash once, and was fine. It didn’t keep you still, but it kept you in the seat.
Jeeze, nick, lighten up. I found How’s observation interesting. Your rant I found very rude and completely unnecessary. Yeah, it is a comic strip but when it is drawn from real life (as opposed to something like Tom & Jerry), a certain level of factual reality is usually followed. If it bugged you so much, do not read his posts in the future. I will most likely not be reading yours.
On the seatbelt issue, if the law wasn’t passed until the 80s I imagine grandma and grandpa might not know about it or are too old to think about it. My own mom didn’t know that infants had to be rear facing till 1 year and was surprised at the recommendation of rear facing till 2 years. If she was out with my baby he’d have been forward facing for sure, law or no, because old people will be old people.
I put them in my ’57 Beetle before they were even optional accessories. Later, in another car, they saved my life when hit by an idiot who thought 50+ mph was a proper speed to run a red light in downtown Dallas.
IIRC, the original BC seatbelt law only required a lap belt, and only in the front seat. In which case it’s only panel one which looks like grandpa may not be wearing his. You can’t make any judgement on the other panels. (Incidentally, the lap belt was supposed to be worn across the thighs, so would still be out of frame in panel 1.)
I have to chuckle over the issue of seat belts — when I was a kid, the seat belt was my Dad’s arm. Don’t bother to lecture, I use them every time I get in the car. However, I was once in an accident where my friend flipped her convertible, and if I had had a seat belt on, I would have probably died.

Ah, the magic of a moving car. But this strip is really showing its age—not a seat belt for any of them.

It’s so weird to see everyone all loosey-goosey without seatbelts. I can’t look.

Hard to lie down in a seat belt. She would have had to redraw and rewrite.

Thanks for doing my googling for me. I’ve been living in Canada for nearly 5 years and it’s nice to learn new things.

When California passed our law requiring seatbelts, my mom and stepdad were very angry at being “forced” to wear them!

Like when my 5 yr old son says out of the blue, “I did not make a mess in the kitchen, momma!”
