Doesn’t the GPS system work even if the phone is off? Granted if the display is off the GPS transponder should still work by letting the NSA’s Spy Sats, er I mean Google’s Sats, er IRS’s Sats track the phone’s movement. Think I read that the GPS is always on until the power source is depleted or removed.

Danae is lost because her Garmin is busted. Moby-Tom isn’t lost because he uses TomTom.

If the phone uses the GPS satellites, it can still know where it is. But GPS satellites don’t receive signals, so she is still lost in the woods. Maybe she’ll stay there for a while… A LONG while.

Um no. If you don’t have any bars, you don’t have any bars. The GPS in your phone is a receiver, not a transmitter. OTOH, this is cartoon physics, so I guess anything goes.

Some cell phone can not be turned 100% off and some you can not remove the battery. For those types of phones you can get cell phone lead shielding anti-tracking cases. There are more than a few companies making them.

“The whole point of “instant on” is that you can’t shut down whatever you are using totally unless the battery or other power source is removed. Even so the timing is good here.”

Oh yeah … those sneak circuits drive my DH nuts. He’s a watt counter. Have you ever done that? It can actually be a considerable source of enlightenment. All those sneak circuits do add up …

Of course, phones, kindles and those kinds of devices merely lose a portion of battery life.
