Hmm, my post vanished! I thought i’d double-posted and deleted one… but great cartooning as always, Jen!. My understanding – and I’m British, so help me out here – is that Pierre was an illegal immigrant until the moment he entered a marriage of convenience with Donna. Is there a homage to Gerard Depiardieu going on here – the movie “Green Card”? Which I suppose makes Donna into Andie McDowell – a woman who still looks pretty good at fifty. Which is my second observation: Donna looks a good twenty years older here through sleep deprivation! (Thinks: are Pierre and Donna due an investigation form the Immigration Service?) Second observation: when the Islamic armies first swept out of Arabia into Egypt, they viewed the pyramids as a nice handy source of building material, and promptly stripped the Great Pyramid of its limestone facing so as to build a mosque in Cairo. Roman observers had noticed the outer face of the Great Pyramid was full of ornate carving and heiroglyphs – now most of this has been reshaped into the great mosque of Cairo, we’ll never know what it said. Now this isn’t pointing the finger at Islam – any structure perceived as outlasting its original purpose is inevitably recycled regardless of the religion and ethnicity of the people doing the recycling. Hadrian’s Wall, for instance, was seen as a handy source of pre-quarried stone by the British, the Ango-Saxons, the English and the Scots, and half its length is levelled to the ground…
